Pop diva Kumi Koda in hot water over 'rotten womb' gaffe
Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at 07:35 EST
TOKYO Singer Kumi Koda has apologized after saying women over 35 had "rotten" fluid in their wombs, sparking a furor that led a cosmetics maker to suspend advertisements featuring her. "I sincerely and deeply apologize for offending people with my remark," Koda, a 25-year-old pop idol famed for her cute and sexy look, said on her official website. Her agency, Avex Entertainment, said it was taking the matter seriously and announced a halt to promotional activities for her latest album, "Kingdom," which was released at the end of January.
Speaking on a popular radio program, Koda said that her newlywed manager should have children soon for the sake of the mother's amnion, the part of the womb that protects an embryo.
"Mothers' amnion fluid is rotten once they turn around 35," she said. "I mean it. It gets dirty." The soundbite was reproduced on Internet sites along with furious postings.
Some sites listed companies sponsoring her, urging consumers to complain. There has already been an effect. Kose Corp, Japan's third-ranked cosmetics maker, halted online advertisements for its Visee brand, one of its major lineups, which features the pop star.
'We judged it necessary to suspend it as there are people who were offended,' a company spokesman said, adding they had not decided whether to scrap the campaign entirely.
Japan has one of the world's lowest birthrates, but a growing number of women, particularly professionals, are starting families later in life.
Yes. I thought that only the USA had dumbed down government schools. Looks like diva Kumi Koda is as smart as a doorknob.
Bad Kumi. Bad girl. Go to your womb.
....a chance at fame, celebrity and the riches and privelages of same...is a rare thing.
So I enjoy when one who almost had it says something so impossibly stupid that they lose everything.”
So you enjoy the failure of others. How brave of you to admit. Most people would be embarrassed and afraid people would think they were heartless bastards if they were to admit they hated people, especially sucessful people.
Lighten up Francis
“Lighten up Francis”
I find the glee that this society takes in the suffering of others distastful. So sue me...
Heh.
There’s always one self-righteous jerk in the crowd, eh?
Why don’t you go get laid? You’ll feel better.
“I find the glee that this society takes in the suffering of others distastful. So sue me...”
When you consider that celebrities are generally detestible people who through their words and actions promote values and behaviors that are destructive to society, it makes sense that people enjoy watching them self destruct.
Yes, but there is something impressive about the fact that the comment itself, which probably would've passed unnoticed here, has generated such outrage and forced such an abject apology in Japan.
I'm also glad FR has a preview feature.
It's not a clintonesque "If I offended ..." collection of weasel words.
Celebrities are no better or worse than any other random sampling of society. There are nice ones and there are @ssholes.
Since it’s unlikely many of the people on this thread who are taking delight in ‘what’s her name’s’ plight have even heard of her before, how would you know which category she falls into?
Jealousy and spitefulness are the only reasons some people enjoy dragging celebrities, or anyone else more successful than themselves, down.
They aren’t attributes people generally brag about having.
For some reason I first thought this was giraffe.
“Celebrities are no better or worse than any other random sampling of society. There are nice ones and there are @ssholes.”
That’s a nice platitude but I think reality is very different. Virtually every celeb I have ever heard of has shown themselves to be in the A-hole category. Can you name more than a handful who aren’t?
Perhaps folks in the traditional “celebrity” lines of work that are not A-holes don’t seek the typical trappings of celebrity.
I’d hit it. (Somebody had to say it)
Having said that, her theory strikes me as quite novel. As in, made up out of whole cloth.
