Major GOP donor says state party in trouble
The Associated Press via PE.com ^ | 02-10-2008 | MICHAEL R. BLOOD

Posted on 02/10/2008 7:43:17 PM PST by Amerigomag

An influential Republican donor with ties to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is pressuring the California GOP to overhaul its operations, depicting Chairman Ron Nehring as an ineffective, insular manager apparently more concerned with promoting conservative purity than electing Republicans.

In a four-page letter to Nehring obtained by The Associated Press, Larry Dodge outlines a litany of complaints against the state party, from sinking registration numbers to suspect expenditures by party officers. More troubling for the state party, Dodge, the American Sterling Co. chief executive strongly hints in the letter that he may withhold a $3 million check he was planning to write within days to retire the state party's long-standing debt. That would be a devastating financial blow in the midst of the 2008 election season.

In the letter, Dodge urges Nehring to support a party platform that reflects "core principles" and honors diversity, "not just the position of a few." That echoed a proposal from Schwarzenegger, who wants the platform distilled into as little as a single page focused on lowering taxes, limiting the size of government and building a strong national defense.

It also mirrors divisions witnessed in the candidacy of McCain, whose conservative credentials are under constant attack by member of his own party. Apparently alluding to frequent criticism of Schwarzenegger from the party's right flank, Dodge said in his letter the party should adopt a rule that would prohibit board members from publicly criticizing elected Republicans.

OC business moguls are feeling the pinch. The dollars they are investing in liberal, Republican candidates are not returning pork to their corporate coffers because contrary conservatives are undermining their efforts.

“sinking registration numbers?”

Before Schwarzenegger was elected governor, the GOP was increasing in registration every year. And had gained the majority in 22 counties in 12 years. Since RINOld has been governor the GOP has lost the majority in 2 counties.

Well the CA GOP wanted RINOld and what did we get?
Another liberal incompetent governor.

And the CA GOP wonders why registration numbers are sinking?

It doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to figure out that if you have a governor who fails, the party fails.

The only difference in this liberal governor and the liberal governor we recalled is his party affiliation.

It’s not just California GOP that’s in trouble.

Almost all state GOP organizations are in disarray. They evolved from hard working, motivated, conservative leaders to resume builders and hacks looking for a political appointment and an ego trip.

Twelve years in power made them lazy and in some cases corrupt, but most importantly, indifferent to conservative ideals and the wishes of the voters.

Until this deadwood is removed the Republican party will not return to the Reagan ideals or the Gingrich revolution. Elections are won with great leaders and a motivated base. There is nothing on the immediate horizon that indicates a return to these values.

Excuse me, but if you come on a CA thread, at least be respectful enough to spell the name of our state correctly.
C...A...L...I...F...O...R...N...I...A

And FYI, Kentucky, CA not only gave America one of the greatest POTUS, Ronald Reagan but we have more registered Conservatives & Republicans than any other state in the Union; not to mention that CA is the home of FR. And any current problems we have in CA we will solve without your help and without your sophomoric posts. You have enough problems of your own in KY, so I suggest you focus on yours and let us solve ours.

Conservatives should absolutely be contrary to MuckCain and Schwartzenswindler at each and EVERY opportunity!!!

The CAGOP is taking money from 4 Indian Gaming entities so the ads for the 4 propositions can say the measures are supported by "The California Republican Party!" The Party is in such deep debt and desperate straights that it has no choice but to do this.

It's only a preview of the whole state's fiscal death spirial as it tries stupidier and stupidier ways of paying off all the Schwartzenswindler bondage debt in the future.

Pictures of the cult movie AMERICATHON starring John Ritter keep flashing through my mind. The Indian Chieftan finally held the national debt and Ritter, playing the President (Just like Jimmy Carter) was making like Jerry Lewis with a telethon to raise money to service the debt to the Indian Chieftan.

Seriously, life is rapidly beginning to immitate life here in the tarnished Golden State!!!

Thats not what he is saying. Dodge is actually making a lot of sense here. It was a very stupid move to not let independents vote in the Republican primary. By reducing the pool of voters to only registered republicans, we now have John McCain winning CA. If we would have opened it to Independents a larger pool of voters would have been able to provide their say as to who they thought should be the Republican nominee. A closed primary was geared to benefit Romney, who I personally supported, but it didn’t help widen the base and it back-fired, in the minds of many Republicans.

Plus, Dodge is also right about the petty infighting suggestion. There’s a alot of kooks that have no problem damaging the party from the inside and in the long-run, that only helps the libs. A house divided, and all that stuff.

We shall continue to withold our financial support of the GOP be it California or National until we see some progress towards recognition of their traditional base.

If the GOP insists upon tacking to Port, and tossing Conservatives overboard as they go, then to “H” with them. We will have no choice but to start over and build a new and viable Conservative Political Party from scratch.

It will take many years and much grief, but if that’s what is needed....”Let’s roll”.

Heck, they don’t even need to re-register to vote for the Dem in the fall.

Well, it does have a choice... they just won't do that. (i.e. change their leftist ways, kick out the bums, gain back support, and get donations).

It seems to me that we're just headed back to those "good old days" like when Southern Pacific owned the politicians in California. We're headed in the same direction, just with different names. The New Majority comes to mind and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if some were hooked up in business ventures with some of these tribes.

These folks have a ton of money invested in taking over this party and they are now getting a bit ticked off that we won't vote for their preferred choices that will protect their "interests." It didn't surprise me to find Bill Jones on Dodge's federal contribution list. Can't ya just quiet down and get in line behind the sheep? They know best, ya know? ;-)

Last week, I got a robo-call from Nehring urging me to support the tripling of Indian gaming in California. (Well, he didn't say that--he said some mumbo jumbo about the revenue solving the state deficit. yeah, right!) Anyway, from what I've seen, Nehring is far from a purist or idealogue. But if these "new majority" type operatives don't like him, my opinion of him has just greatly improved!
