Huckabee's Madison stop An editorial 2/14/2008 10:38 am
Madison is not exactly the most Republican city in Wisconsin, so we always give credit to GOP contenders who make stops here.
Frankly, it takes guts.
And former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has them. He was not merely slipping into town today with an airport stop -- like Bob Dole did some years ago -- he was going to the belly of the beast: downtown Madison.
That's classic Huckabee. Though he is sometimes portrayed as a simplistic evangelical contender -- which is, to be sure, a big part of his appeal to conservative voters -- the former governor has worked harder than other Republicans to reach voters who don't fit traditional Republican categories.
Huckabee has won the support of unions representing machinists and painters, which usually back Democrats. And he did so by breaking with Republican orthodoxy to question free trade deals that close factories and eliminate U.S. jobs. He has also complained about an economic system that favors the wealthiest Americans rather than working families.
While we disagree with Huckabee on many issues, we appreciate his skepticism regarding the GOP's misguided approaches to taxes, trade and a host of other economic issues.
He's welcome in Madison, as are any other Republican contenders who might want to visit. But, more than that, he's got a message -- at least when it comes to economics -- that makes sense to Madisonians who know the approaches of the Bush-Cheney administration and their Republican allies in Congress have failed.

Hillary Clinton neglects Wisconsin An editorial 2/14/2008 8:58 am
Guess we don't count for much in New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's eyes.
The Democratic presidential contender, after going 0-8 in recent primaries and caucuses, has a new "Path to the Nomination" strategy that is sketched out in a memo authored by her chief campaign planner.
But Democratic strategist Tom Penn's memo fails to mention Wisconsin's Feb. 19 primary.
Instead, it declares: "Change begins March 4."
That's the day when Texas and Ohio vote in primaries that have drawn Clinton away from Wisconsin for much of this critical pre-primary week.
We don't mean to rain on Penn's parade, but Wisconsinites will make choices on Feb. 19 that send a powerful signal with regard to the long-term viability of Clinton's candidacy. She and her aides should be taking the Badger State's primary seriously.
Polls suggest that she now trails here. Some of that has to do with Barack Obama's smart organizing and campaigning. But Clinton would undoubtedly be doing better if she was trying harder.
Shouldn’t have ignored the progressives.
He's welcome in Madison, as are any other Republican contenders who might want to visit. But, more than that, he's got a message -- at least when it comes to economics -- that makes sense to Madisonians who know the approaches of the Bush-Cheney administration and their Republican allies in Congress have failed.
Nuff' said. Huckabee's liberal vanity tour continues.
Well, Huck is more appealing than Hillary. He just eats squirrel, he isn’t one.
Madison: 25 square miles surrounded by reality
Some fallacies are too obvious to resist, alright. Just like a mudhole that just begs the willing to jump.
And now, let us all study the term "republican" and ponder whether it denotes power beind disposed by ruling classes, or some kind of consideration for each individual and their coming together for the opportunity of all.
IOW, try again, cheap shooter.
Could you please just change your name to "Spin"? I simply took a Madison editorial's own words to show that he is not a genuine conservative.
What Huckabee will become is the new John McCain, the first Republican go-to guy for comments that bemoan this or that Republican stance.
Mike Huckabee is a more genuine conservative than Rush Limbaugh.
Help make calls for Mike Huckabee!
They have an easy to use, Web-based format and script.
Huckabee’s approach to taxes is the Fair Tax which taxes wealth instead of productivity. Its very conservative and is great for the average American. Just because He is winning over Dims like Reagan did, doesn’t make him liberal.
