Jack Kemp's Message to Conservatives: Lay Off McCain (Transcript of interview on H&C)
Fox News ^ | Feb. 18, 2007 | Hannity, Colmes, Kemp

Posted on 02/18/2008 12:32:06 PM PST by FocusNexus

This is a rush transcript from "Hannity & Colmes," February 15, 2008.

ALAN COLMES, CO-HOST: ...Former vice presidential nominee and McCain supporter, Jack Kemp, penned an open letter to these critics. And he wrote. quote, "you gave them your best shots and he took it like a man. Now as he head toward the nomination, I urge you to continue to be critical but to do so in measured ways that will not damage his ability to win in November." Joining us now to explain further, Jack Kemp, Secretary Kemp, welcome back to "Hannity & Colmes."

COLMES: ... Are the conservatives who are attacking John McCain or differing with him, depending upon which person you're listing to, what the tone is, hurting the Republican party?

KEMP: No. I, you know, eventually, you want them to be on board a McCain campaign, I think the Bible says very clearly who "he who wrestles with us strengthens us." And I think John has been strengthened by going through this. I hope that as you pointed out, in quoting my letter, that the criticisms are measured here as he comes closer to the nomination so that when he does run against Barack or Hillary, he's not weakened to the point where we end up electing somebody who would wave a white flag to Al Qaeda or end up putting Supreme Court justices on the Supreme Court who are to the left of where the American people are.

Kemp needs to retire down in Mexico, where he can be among friends.

You still haven't answered. So, here is some more:

Hugo Chavez vs. the Media
The Venezuelan strongman tries to crackdown on his country's journalists while Jack Kemp shills for him in America.
The Weekly Standard, 06/09/2003

(snip)

And to further control the media, Chavez has imposed exchange controls. No Venezuelan citizen may purchase foreign currency without government permission--an act that renders the local currency worthless for import transactions. As a result, any television company that needs to purchase electronic equipment or any newspaper editor wishing to order newsprint paper or buy ink must petition the currency control agency that is, conveniently, headed by a man who assisted Lt. Col. Chavez in his failed 1992 coup attempt.

TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, some American elites are actively shilling for the Chavez regime even as the media crackdown proceeds. Jack Kemp, notably, has been busy opening doors for the Chavez government. Recently Kemp and the Venezuelan ambassador visited the Wall Street Journal's editorial board in an unsuccessful attempt to charm the paper away from its anti-Chavez stance. Since that visit, the Journal reported that Kemp has been trying to broker a complicated deal to fill the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve with Venezuelan oil via an intermediary company--Free Market Petroleum LLC--on whose board Kemp sits. Since hooking up with Free Market Petroleum, Kemp has visited with Chavez and his ministers in Caracas. Surely he must have noticed Chavez's brutality here.

Conservatives stayed home and handed Congress to the Democrats.

Republicans moved to the Left and abandoned conservatives.

Are conservatives going to stay home in November and help elect Hillary or Hussein?

Are conservatives going to once again "hold their noses" and step-n-fetchit for the GOP establishment? If Hillary or Obama is elected, that is NOT my problem.

You both need to brush up on history.

Prop 187 WAS APPROVED overwhelmingly, 58-41%.
Even legal Hispanics approved it.

It was overturned by two liberal judges, delayed, and then liberal governor Gray Davis refused to appeal it.

Subsequently, the welfare spigot was opened and Southern California is now virtually a Latin American nation ruled by a Latin American government which will go the Kosovo route in both your lifetimes.

Future Presidents won’t be campaigning there - they will be sending ambassadors.

The questions concern the subject of this thread, Kemp, not Reagan, and as is par for the course with mindless drones, you're in a panic, trying to change the subject to save face.

She absolutely nailed your pathetic keister to the wall, and didn't miss one perl in her knitting.

With Kemp’s recent business dealings, he is a HUGE liability for McCain.
I honestly don’t know why he keeps traipsing him out there!

Thanks for the comments... and I don’t even knit! LOL.

Prop 187 was over turned by a Federal Judge, after the people of California voted overwhelmingly for 187 in a free election. The Feds working in concert with state government co-conspirators burned our ballots and declared our free election illegal.

Never forget what these bastards did.

The results of these traitors actions can now be seen from Las Vegas to North Carolina and all points in between.

Also remember that conservatives unhappy with Bush I for “not being conservative enouch” who voted for Ross Perot gave us 8 years of Bill Clinton and launched Hillary’s political career.

Bush I never had those votes to begin with. Perot got the votes he got because of his message. If there had been no Perot, those voters would have voted for some other 3rd party or stayed home. You have no proof that conservatives "helped" Bubba win in 1992.

As I said, the best kept “secret” is that conservatives are the best asset the Democrats have. History proved it, but conservatives still don’t want to learn that the only thing that matters is the CONSEQUENCES of your actions.

Yeah, and we should just elect anyone that has an "R" next to their name. Look how that happened in California, you guys whined that Schwarzenegger was the best choice and now he's run the state and the party totally into the ground. Good conservatives like Hunter, Tancredo, Fred Thompson, and especially Ron Paul were all given the shaft by the GOP establishment while they kissed up to Rudy McRomney.

(Hands over ears) "LA-LA-LA...I DON'T CARE IF HILLARY/OBAMA WINS, LA-LA-LA..."

Fine. Hillary becomes President and we retake Congress in 2010 with a crop of hardscrabble conservatives.

Beats giving the Dems veto-proof majorities in both houses as a dispirited GOP falls apart with a poseur of a President at the spiritual helm of the party.

If McCain wins in 2008 then we absolutely LOSE in 2010.

Cut and run in Iraq (our soldiers will thank you for staying home, not to mention Al Qaeda)

Ain't going to happen. Dems control both chambers of Congress and they still can't bring the troops home. Both Hillary and Obama have no timetable for withdrawal because they both know there'll be Hell to pay if terrorists get the upper-hand.

2) Raise Taxes (small business owners will thank you for staying home)

And the economy will slow down and the Dems will get the blame and put Republicans in better shape for 2010 & 2012

3) Tax “windfall profits” (consumers will thank you for staying home)

ROFL - What makes you think McStain won't tax corporations? Per his debate with Romney, he hates corporate profits.

4) Appoint pro abortion judges (the unborn will thank you for staying home)

McCain will appoint O'Connors and Souters, so what's your point?

5) Spend, spend and spend some more (tax payers will thank you for staying home)

Republicans have been in control of Congress from 2000-2006 and along with Bush, spending has skyrocketed.

Kemp's oil deal ; Marketing work in Venezuela draws criticism
The Washington Times, July 15, 2003, pg. A.13
Neoconservative leader Jack Kemp has joined a company that plans to purchase oil from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government and sell it to the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

The retired pro football star, congressman and 1996 Republican vice-presidential candidate is working with Free Market Petroleum LLC, which signed a contract with Venezuela's Ministry of Energy and Mines in January to purchase 50,000 barrels of petroleum per day for three years.

No oil has yet been shipped, but the deal, potentially worth more than $1 billion, is generating criticism in Venezuela because of several features that vary sharply from the country's past oil- marketing practices.

(snip)

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Mr. Kemp had developed a friendship with the Venezuelan ambassador in Washington, former oil executive Bernardo Alvarez, and had accompanied him on public-relations missions, including an editorial board meeting at the Journal.

The paper [WSJ] also said Mr. Kemp had met repeatedly with Department of Energy officials in Washington on behalf of Free Market Petroleum, where he is on the board of directors, and had accompanied its executives to meet with Mr. Chavez and other Venezuelan executives in Caracas.

Venezuelan critics of the oil contract most of whom oppose Mr. Chavez's rule say there is no record of Free Market Petroleum having carried out any previous business transaction. It was registered in Delaware late last year, as was its holding company, Free Market Holdings.

I agree. Seems that there is no shortage of “nattering nabobs of negativity” here on FR. I have always blamed Paul Wyrich, the talking head dejour, in 1992 for giving us Bill Clinton. He led in raging the “read my lips, no new tax” war on GHWB.

Saddam's Man in Washington (The first conviction in the U.N. Oil-for-Food scandal)
The Weekly Standard, January 31, 2005
SAMIR VINCENT was visiting Baghdad when Saddam Hussein ordered the invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. He had not lived in his native Iraq for some three decades, having left in 1958 for the United States and a track-and-field career that would later land him in the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame. Maybe Vincent's presence in Iraq was simply bad timing. Although Americans were not exactly hostages in the tense days after the invasion, they were not free to leave Iraq. So when Vincent, a naturalized citizen, and Illinois businessman Michael Saba managed to escape by taking a taxicab eight hours to the Jordanian border and hitchhiking the remaining 50 miles to Amman, their adventure was news.

(snip)

Vincent is the first person to be charged in connection with the burgeoning U.N. Oil-for-Food scandal. According to information filed by the U.S. government in the Southern District of New York, Vincent "consulted with and repeatedly received direction from the Government of Iraq in the course of lobbying officials of the United States Government and the United Nations to repeal sanctions against Iraq." Last week he pleaded guilty to acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, making false statements on his income taxes, and related offenses.

Court documents tell us that Vincent began his activities on Saddam's behalf in "at least" 1992. ...

(snip)

From 1998 to 2003, Vincent tried to prevail upon former U.S. government officials with ties to top Clinton and Bush administration officials who might press his case with their powerful friends. Among those he contacted was former U.S. representative and GOP vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp, who had long opposed the sanctions. (Newsweek magazine reported this week that the FBI has interviewed Kemp. Although Kemp reportedly approached Colin Powell and Dick Cheney about back-channel communications with Vincent and later announced his intention to launch a "21st Century Marshall Plan" with the Iraqi American, there is no indication that Kemp is the target of an investigation.) Vincent reported on his progress to the Iraqi Intelligence Service and others working for Saddam.

Jack Kemp is the horse’s butt who accepted Algore’s “compliment” that he wasn’t a racist like all the other republicans. By the time gore finished his compliment, I was screaming at the TV and expecting Kemp to jump in his chili...but no, he just said thank you.

It spoke volumes about what Kemp thinks about the unwashed masses.

I’ve had a low opinion of him ever since.

I’ll put his endorsement of McCain right up next to GWB’s...and roll on.

Your choice is McCain vs. Hillarobama.

I'm writing in Dr. Paul's name. There's my choice back at ya.

It’s time to wake up and smell reality.

I did already. My candidate conveyed the most conservative principles of Republicanism and got crapped on. So my vote & support goes elsewhere.

Any conservative not voting for McCain is effectively voting for Hillarobama.

My non-support and vote for McStain does not equal a vote for the Dems, sorry.
