But as I recall from the late 1950s, there was no Army Aviation branch as such, and pilots might be from any of them.

Same situation in the 1970's. We had several aviators in my armor battalion desperately trying to get "branch qualified" for promotion and avoid getting rifted.

I'm a 'Nam vet, I watched this show and it was the same BS I've seen for the last 25 years. The only new footage I saw were of some dead bodies on both sides.
Compared to "The 10,000 Day War", which I consider to be the most virulent, anti-American/Vietnam War documentary I've ever seen, this one was pretty tame. Nevertheless, it did have its PC moments.
As an aside - my local cable company just picked up National Geographic Channel in HD so I've watched a few more of their shows than I normally would. What I find most egregious about the NGC are the number of their shows promoting Global Warming as accepted fact. Absolutely disgusting.

Man that is a heart wrenching incredible story. What a most wonderful fellow he is. 22 flights into LZ X Ray in one day.

Even without being under fire, I don't think most people can understand how much work and stamina that would involve. For one thing that has to be at least 8 hot refuelings, although I doubt he was in the same bird all day.

In every CMH commendation I have ever read, I have found a connecting theme. And that is these people while forced into the most extreme circumstances of the violence and chaos and insanity of war, become much more than that.

You’re right, it was incredible heroism and the crew with him were volunteers. I can’t remember where I read it but they flew the missions in either three of four different choppers because of battle damage.
