'The Day She Died, She Knew She Couldn't Talk To Police,' Mom Says
DELAND, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in a murder-suicide apparently committed by her ex-boyfriend said the teen was told by police to stop calling for help or she'd be arrested.
Police said Clay Coffner shot his estranged girlfriend, Natasha Hall, in the head outside her DeLand home Friday before turning the gun on himself.
Hall's mother, Sherry, said her daughter was concerned about Coffner and informed police.
In fact, Hall said her daughter called police so much that on Jan. 15 they threatened her.
"The police officer said if you call us one more time on him, I'm going to arrest you both," Sherry Hall said. "So, the day she died, she knew she couldn't talk to police. So, she handled it herself."
Michele Karpowicz said everyone noticed the warning signs before the homicide -- except police.
"I was going crazy," Hall's best friend said. "He was psycho, jealous and abusive."
Local 6 is trying to obtain a police call log to determine how many times the teen called police.
DeLand police officials have not responded to the allegations.
He updated it the day he killed her and himself. In reading the details, he clearly was a threat and very obsessed.
The sad fact is, police would often rather handle drug busts because they are time consuming and safe.
You berate the police regardless of what they do or dont do. You cry about how they are jack-boots, then fully expect them to arrest anyone who gets a complaint via 911. If they had arrested this guy before he had committed a crime, you a$$-wipes would be bitching about that too. The police arent personal bodyguards.
God, you freaking barker-lounger bad-asses make me sick.
What cite is that?
Then she needed to press charges and/or get a restraining order. If the boyfriend hasn't broken any law, there is nothing the cops can OR SHOULD do.
Heroes like that don't exist anymore. Sad.
Don’t get me started...
Ehhh, I dunno about that. While I am extremely proud of my uncles and their service to this country, along with the millions of others who served and sacrificed in WWII, I know many others who were every bit as heroic in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Beruit, Bosnia, Somolia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and several others I know I’ve missed, and probably some other places we will never know about. I personally know several young people who have joined the military in the past couple of years, knowing full-well what they are likely facing, and I can’t help but get a huge lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye, and be just as proud of them as I am of my uncles. True Americans rise to the need now, just as they did then...
What could the mom have done? The girl should have kept calling, and at least she would have been arrested and held in jail. It is absurd to think that is the only way, but at least she would have been in a safer situation. That judge that said the police have no duty to protect you, I would have asked “What are my tax dollars paying them to do”.
I wonder where her father was...or a brother or relative. Heck, my mother wouldn’t have just done nothing.
Poor girl.
Not likely. Sounds like a bunch of doughnut eaters in fact. Busy men who should not ordinarily be bothered by phonecalls.
Well said.
Really? A co-worker of mine said her ex got sent to jail for violating her restraining order.
You bet.
Quite the contrary. If you’ll check her history, you’ll find her to be a knee-jerk cop groupie, who thinks that badged goons can do no wrong.
Amen, brother. It's part of being self reliant and personally responsibile that all should learn.
One crucial fact that’s missing from the story: what did the police do the first X number of times she called, before they threatened to arrest her for calling too much?
If they had come to her house numerous times, only to be told each time that they had “made up”, I can understand them not wanting to come back, although if that had happened enough times one would think that there would be some method by which the two could be separated.
On the other hand, if the police did nothing the first 20 times she called, and told her they’d arrest her on the 21st, there’s a big problem.
Also, where were this poor girl’s parents?
