OK so we shoot to smithers this bus sized object that is falling to earth. Instead of a large item coming down now we have schrapnel coming down all over the place? Or would it have broken to pieces anyway when it entered our atmosphere? Will these small pieces all burn up?

Oh well, at least we sent a message that we can do it, that should be very positive in itself.

Let’s see Russia or China accomplish this. Not in 1000 tries.

Yer right.

It only took one.

Thank you Ronald Reagan

Indeed. I think everyone here remembers well how the libs excoriated Reagan about Star Wars and how it was a fantasy and could never work!!

God bless you, President Reagan - and to all the libs out there, I extend a single, upraised digit.

I don’t know that the missile itself was a “Star Wars” missile but the Aegis radar system that guided it to the target was developed as part of SDI. The missile may well be a result of SDI research but I’m not 100% sure on that. Either way, its vindication of Reagan’s vision.

... mission to destroy a potentially hazardous failing satellite ...

It sends a message to people like Kim Jong-Il and Ali Khameini ...

Satellites have carried hydrazine since day 1, and we have just now become worried that they are "potentially hazardous." Ri-i-i-ight! That first statement is technically known as a "fig leaf."

This kill represents one small part of the “SDI” vision of President Reagan. However, it is even more important because it accomplishes something, possibly even more difficult, than the “kill a ballistic missile” vision. Such missiles are hot and therefore easier to sense, and are on a very predictable trajectory outside of the atmosphere. The satellite was cold, and its trajectory was changing each time around the earth due to atmospheric drag, albeit in a relatively known fashion. The sensors of the kill vehicle had to be hurriedly modified to accomplish this feat.

This is exactly a successful demonstration of the technology of President Reagan’s vision that libnuts said would never work, and in some ways, shows even more broad based capability than his vision.

Most of this will now vaporize, rather than hang together in a flaming ball which will impact.
