John McCain's Very Bad Day
Time .com ^ | 2/21/08 | MICHAEL SCHERER/ WAYNE

Anytime John McCain declines to speak to the press, something horrible must be happening.

Back in New Hampshire, McCain held press conferences after every event, taking questions from reporters more often than he'd rub his lucky nickel. In Iowa, he would talk to scribes for hours on his bus, get off and then 30 minutes later hold an avail. The journalists would look at each other, bemused and defeated, with no questions left.

But Thursday was a different matter. In the wake of a scandalous New York Times story suggesting a romantic fling with a lobbyist, McCain arrived at a Ford Focus car assembly plant with a decidedly tense grin plastered across his face. His campaign staff promptly separated anyone with a pen or a tape recorder from the candidate. "The McCain campaign decided who they wanted on the tour, and it's only photographers," a nice lady from Ford announced after a reporter spotted the candidate behind a car chasse and tried to approach him.

In three weeks time since you signed up, you’re making pronouncements like you’ve been here since the beginning.

McCain hatred?

How about just plain old distrust for a man who claims to be conservative but hates conservatives?

How about just plain old disagreement with a man who doesn’t share our values, just a party label?

If that is the case, then maybe you should change your screen name to "Conservative in Tokyo" and form common cause with others who call themselves "religious conservatives" [...] all of whom have a hatred for America fueled by their own version of what they call "conservative".

What a vapid and scurrilous statement. Such a remark can only be the result of years of practiced ignorance, or such a level of rampant stupidity as to be beyond all hope.

To compare American Conservatism in such company as these is a vile and misshapen slander. There are NONE more sympathetic to the cause of America than American Conservatives. There are NONE who serve her as readily, and NONE who support her more in a time of war.

But that will always be trumped by defense at home of a necessity- Lest there be no America for our boys to return to. To continue to lend support to this administration, and it's anointed heir, is to cripple our sovereignty and to send us most perilously down the road to socialism by the self same devices and affiliations which were erected to defend against it. Those who would aid this treasonous lot solely for the cause of war are the "useful idiots" to whom you refer, every bit as much as those who would support them in the name of "free trade".

AMERICAN patriots do not cheer to have America lose a war.

No one here is cheering any such lose, and it is a silly and presumptuous idea. Just because the Dems will retreat in the face of the enemy does not mean the war is over, or is lost. It is a terrible price to pay, but pay we must. For our enemy is not vanquished, and will come here to further their means. That day must now come. It is inevitable.

You base your prediction of what McCain would do from his part in the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. This bill failed June 28th, 2007 as a result of the huge groundswell of public opposition. This bill actually had many hands in its making. Besides McCain you had Senators Kennedy, Kyle, Grahm, Feintstein, Martinez, Salazar, and Spector. Its chief sponsor was Senator Harry Reid. In fact, this was primarily a Democrat effort to alter the political landscape to favor Democrats.

You are correct when you say, the Democrats were engineering the conditions for “One big statist, third-world cesspool run by a liberal democratic oligarchy safely ensconced in power election after election after election.”

However, McCain’s involvement and perceived promotion of this immigration reform act was a dangerous game. It put this nation at risk of a third world degeneration of American culture. To oppose it would alienate a large segment of the electorate occupied by the Hispanic population.

I don’t hate John McCain. I am a life-long conservative activist, not a DU/Obama pest, but I will never, ever vote for a man who wrote and helped pass a bill outlawing political speech by groups 60 days before an election.

The thought that ANY American politician, let alone a REPUBLICAN politician, could actually think it proper to censor the NRA and Right to Life from criticizing politicians 60 days before an election makes me sick to my stomach...I could never vote for such an un-American, disgusting man.

True, we’ll probably get the kind of censorship seen in Europe and Canada, where people who criticize Islam or homosexuality are arrested, thrown in jail or fined, but McCain is of that same belief, that it is appropriate for government to censor “bad thought,” as Hitlery and Obama, and frankly, if or when it happens, I prefer it not to have come about by someone that I voted for, my conscience won’t allow it.

By the way, I don’t know ANY of my conservative friends who are voting for McCain...his views are so far off conservative principles that in essence it would be like voting for our ideological opposites.

Ed

I never thought I would see the day the people on this website would cheer on a leftist media smear machine on a repub and actively help elect a radical socialist dem. McCain hatred has warped people beyond repair. ..... melt

This is a Conservative Website. Not a Republican Party Website. Therein lies your explanation. Deal with it. ...... AmericanInTokyo

If that is the case, then maybe you should change your screen name to "Conservative in Tokyo" and form common cause with others who call themselves "religious conservatives" [...] all of whom have a hatred for America fueled by their own version of what they call "conservative". ..... I always thought that Free Republic was always, above all, a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN forum. ... AMERICAN patriots do not cheer to have America lose a war. ... Traitorous Copperheads, "useful idiots" and "misguided terrorist supporters" do. ..... Polybius

Since when did you or AmericanInTokyo become "American Conservatism" incarnate?

Is it not "rampant stupidity" or the ultimate Strawman Argument to claim that the personal views of one particular poster on Free Republic constitute ...... Drumroll, please ...... "American Conservatism"?

I used to think that only leftist Democrats would rather have America lose a war than lose a domestic political fight. It seems, however, that some on Free Republic have redefined Conservatism to put their own political feuds first and American victory in its wars second, just like the Kucinich wing the the Democrat Party does.

TRUE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVES do not help America lose wars.

If the Copperhead skin fits, wear it.

What other label you care to attach to yourself and hide behind, be it "conservative" or "liberal" or "libertarian" or "right wing" or "left wing" or "turkey wing" is irrelevant.

A Copperhead is a Copperhead.

“We as a Republic survived four years of Carter...”

Yes. And you and I did as individuals, AIT.
However, many of our fellow countrymen suffered immeasurably or didn’t survive because of him either during his four years or later.
I shouldn’t have to explain that any further to a conservative.

They have big plans to bring socialism to the US in 4 years!

Guess what? It's been here for so long that few people even recognize it. Public schools, the socialist gift that keeps on giving.

Now that the next President is going to be either McCain, Obama or Clinton, I am just trying to be positive. Each of them is a liberal, and each of them will bring their level of destruction to the nation. We must be able to weather it regardless. Thus, the increased emphasis on the state level and local level for elections and activism, as well as preparing our homes and families accordingly for the coming social chaos, government largesse, third world invasion, gun grabbing socialist agenda.

“I never thought I would see the day the people on this website would cheer on a leftist media smear machine on a repub and actively help elect a radical socialist dem.”

I plan to vote and encourage everyone else to vote FOR CONGRESS. I think the Republicans will roll over and play dead for McCain, but they just might fight a Dem in the White House. McCain will follow the Democratic policies just as he has done in the past. And we will end up with one big liberal socialist party and the Muslims still taking over country after country. Bush should never have recognized Kosovo. McCain will be worse.

I would feel more rotten having McCain in office and taking away our freedoms, having known that I voted FOR him, than having him in office and knowing that I did NOT vote for him.

And him in office is substantially no different than Obama or Clinton in there, on the big ticket policy items at least for me.

I will be making a principled vote, and will be able to sleep at night with a good conscience regardless of the outcome, because I will not compromise when it comes to our freedoms, our sovereignty, our Constitution, and our very way of life.
