Montanans Insist on Gun Rights
The Washington Times ^ | February 25, 2008 | Valerie Richardson

Posted on 02/25/2008 3:21:43 PM PST by kellynla

Montana officials are warning that if the Supreme Court rules in the D.C. gun ban case that the right to keep and bear arms protects only state-run militias like the National Guard, then the federal government will have breached Montana's statehood contract.

Nobody is raising flags for the Republic of Montana, but nobody is kidding, either. So far, 39 elected Montana officials have signed a resolution declaring that a court ruling of the Second Amendment is a right of states and not of individuals would violate Montana's compact.

"The U.S. would do well to keep its contractual promise to the states that the Second Amendment secures an individual right now as it did upon execution of the statehood contract," Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson said in a Feb. 15 letter to The Washington Times.

The resolution also was signed by Rep. Denny Rehberg, Montana's lone Republican congressman, and state Sen. Roy Brown, who is running to unseat Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat.

The dispute goes back more than a century. Back in 1889, the settlers of the Montana territory struck a deal with the federal government: They agreed to join the union, and the government agreed that individuals had the right to bear arms.

That has worked fine for the past 118 years, but the Supreme Court is expected next month to hear oral argument in District of Columbia v. Heller, the appeal of a federal court decision striking down the District's gun-ownership ban on Second Amendment grounds.

The high court has not issued a broad ruling on Second Amendment law in almost 70 years, including the key question of whether it provides an individual right, like speech and jury trial, or a "collective right" held by state governments.

still being manufactured by several sources including Remington. Don’t knock it it’s a proven stopper at 800 meters. Brits were very good with those iron sights. Used to have one, I could cut the 10 spot on a 300 yard target with iron sights.

“A 303 british is just about useless. Where are you going to get reliable ammo?”

Try Surplus City, or Sportsmans Warehouse, or Cabellas. Modern manufacture, and it’s a very effective round.

Don’t forget mail order online for large quantities!

And Texas, a prior sovereign nation, has the right to secede.

The Supremes better think this though!

“Also, it takes them a while to figure out where the rounds are coming from, if the shooter does his job properly.”

Luckily our military, I doubt would enforce such a breach of the Constitution.

I can only see the local police Chiefs as possibly trying to enforce a gun seizure (in certain liberal cities), and they can be overwhelmed if foolish enough to give bad orders....
I doubt any police force in Texas would try it (except maybe for Houston).

Are you kidding, all you have to do is reload the 303 Ammo, also people like Cabilla, or Mid Way arms carry 303 ammo in stock. For your information the British 303 has probably killed more big game than any other caliber going. Due to the number of those rifles in Africa. Do not cast any aspersions on the old venerable 303 Brit. I don't want to be in front of one and have a good shot shooting at me. Yes I do own a 303 Brit and it holds a place of high esteem in my opinion.

“I know the Swiss K-31 Carbine has a straight pull bolt which may make it just a touch quicker.”

had one in High School, smooth action, but kind of jerky. The Krag is smoother. I’ll have to take the SMLE and the Krag to the range and do some testing!

No, I’m not kidding. 303 british doesn’t use standard .308 bullets. It uses an oddball diameter bullet.

That comment of mine you are quoting was in the context of a war in progress. Just because some warehouse in finland stocks a few oddball calibers doesn’t mean those calibers are of any use to a guy in montana getting shot at by the enemy.

But you are mistaken, the cartridge is very much in production and for the cost of a new gun you could buy much ammo for your old .303.......

Not interested. Somewhere on this thread, or possibly another related thread, someone else came up with a good idea that I like.

Ream out the chamber of your old 303 british so that it will accept 7.62x54R russian ammo.

That’s a good idea. You can still buy lots of cheap surplus russian ammo. And there’s the added benefit that you can take a crappy old enfield rifle with bad throat erosion and turn it into a good rifle. This is possible because the russian cartridge is longer than the british cartridge. So when the chamber is cut deeper into the bore, the bad part of the barrel is cut out.

Presto! new rifle.

303 is junk as far as im concerned.

So what we are talking about a desigination 303 Brit, not the bullet, we are talking about the rifle.

Look, here it is spelled out for you...

THere’s lots of choices for 308 bullets if you’re going to load your own. For 303 british, you got little to no choices. If you are going to use what’s on the shelf at the average gun shop, you could very well be SOL.

If you don’t like to load your own, your odds of finding 303 ammo at your local small town hardware store/gas station is slim to none and slim’s skipped town.(he went to the big city where the gun shops have better selections, but still shit for 303 british)

Who looks in the local gas station for ammuniation, no one, anyone with a 303 Brit will have enough sense to go to a gun show and come home with a pick up load of ammo, or call Mid Way Arms, you just want to argue.

Maybe I do, but at least I don’t post everything twice. As for gas stations...patrick schwazee does. Ever seen the movie “red dawn”? LOL!

Seriously, I got tired of getting burnt(figuratively, not literally) on 303 ammo. So much of it is so old it goes off like a flint lock...if at all. The hammer falls...wait a second and a half...BANG! THen clear the chamber and inspect the bore and try it again with fingers crossed.

No thanks.
