Coalition forces capture Special Groups facilitator, kill armed criminal
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces captured a suspected Special Groups facilitator and killed an armed criminal here early this morning.
The targeted individual was reportedly an Iranian-backed Special Groups facilitator who arranged for Special Groups criminal militia members to receive training in Iran. The training prepared Special Groups criminals for sniper, improvised explosive device and explosively formed penetrator attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces. As a facilitator, he reportedly coordinated Special Groups funding, training and weapons. Reports also indicate the wanted individual was an associate of Iranian-backed Special Groups criminals involved in attacks on Iraqi and Coalition forces.
Upon arrival at the target area, Coalition forces were engaged by an armed man with an assault rifle. Coalition forces returned fire in self-defense, killing the criminal. Coalition forces continued the operation, capturing the wanted individual without further incident.
“While violence has decreased across the region, a tough fight remains ahead,” said Lt. Col. Maura Gillen, MNF-I spokeswoman. “We will continue to pursue the criminal militias who dishonor al-Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr’s cease-fire pledge by committing senseless acts of violence against the Iraqi people and the security forces that protect them.”

Coalition targets al-Qaeda in northern Iraq; one killed, five detained
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces killed one terrorist and detained five suspects Thursday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda networks operating in northern Iraq.
In northeast Mosul Thursday, Coalition forces targeted a suspect believed to be the replacement for the former Saudi al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader and foreign terrorist facilitator Abu Yasir al-Saudi, also known as Jar Allah, who was killed by Coalition forces Feb. 27 (see MNF-I press release A080301c, “UPDATE: Coalition forces identify AQI leader, associate killed in Mosul raid,” dated March 1, 2008). Reports indicate the targeted individual is involved in coordinating attacks and kidnappings in the area.
Coalition forces followed a vehicle associated with the targeted suspect to a nearby house, where they observed the driver and passenger get out. As the ground force arrived in the area, one of the individuals attempted to shoot at them. Coalition forces engaged the hostile threat, wounding him. The suspect, who was armed with pistols and a grenade, was subsequently detained, treated on site and transported to a military medical facility for further care.
Coalition forces returned to the same area today and captured an alleged senior leader for the terrorist network operating on the east side of the city. Intelligence indicates the suspect is involved in the facilitation and distribution of weapons throughout east Mosul, and oversees several other AQI members. One of his subordinates is reportedly responsible for the production of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained two other suspected terrorists.
Coalition forces conducted an operation north of Tall Afar near Tall Wardan today, targeting an alleged senior level foreign terrorist facilitator associated with numerous AQI senior leaders operating inside and outside of Iraq. During the operation, the ground force called for the suspected terrorists occupying the target building to come out. They did not comply with instructions or heed warnings. Coalition forces perceived hostile intent from the noncompliant suspects and engaged, killing one and wounding another. The wounded suspect was subsequently detained, treated on site and transported to a medical facility for further care.
“Iraqi and Coalition forces will continue to pressure al-Qaeda in Iraq’s networks, diminishing their ability to make indiscriminate attacks,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Our operations are continuing to erode the terrorists’ resources and helping to improve safety and security for Iraqi citizens.”

JORDAN STOPS PUBLIC MOURNING OF GUNMAN

Jordanian security forces have prevented relatives of Ala Abu Dhaim, the man who carried out the terrorist attack in Jerusalem last Thursday, from publicly mourning him.
The relatives, who live near Amman, tried Friday to erect a large tent to receive mourners, but were ordered by Jordanian security officers to dismantle it immediately.
The officers handed the relatives an order signed by the governor of Amman banning them from erecting the tent or publicly mourning Abu Dhaim.
They were also instructed to remove Hamas and Hizbullah flags that were hanging on rooftops and electricity poles.

Re-using syringes in 2007-2008 in the USA is nothing short of unbelievable and despicable as a cost cutting tool.

In the late 1990's the San Francisco Chronicle ran a series of news articles written by: Reynolds Holding, legal affairs writer, and William Carlson, staff writer, entitled "Deadly Needles: A Global Crisis". These articles covered such topics as "Contaminated syringes kill millions each year", "Health workers contract deadly diseases as unsterile needle sticks are common", "Syringes reused in the U.S. despite risks, with cost, ignorance being common excuses", and "Immunization risky in some countries due to reuse of unsafe syringes".
One article stated that 40% of new A.I.D.S. infections in the U.S., are directly, or indirectly, due to contaminated needles. The figure among women and children is 75%.
Internal reports of the World Health Organization (WHO ) stated that the estimated number of world wide infections and deaths caused by reuse of contaminated syringes were: 10 million infections and 1.8 million deaths per year, mostly children. WHO officials say these figures are conservative estimates. The WHO study reported soaring disease rates in Egypt, Brazil, Kenya, India, Cambodia and Russia where the reuse of needles occurs dozens, sometimes hundreds of times.
Due to lack of funds, some countries have tried sterilizing disposable syringes, for reuse during immunization programs, but in many cases they were unsuccessful, and infections resulted.
Thirty-three pilots across Canada have reported being flashed in the eyes by a laser beam while flying, including at least five incidents near Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
Transport Canada is now investigating the incidents, which date back to 2005 and include at least 12 in Ontario.
"It is certainly a concern for us and we're watching it closely," spokesperson Kirsten Goodnough told CTV.ca, saying she has no explanation for the increasing frequency of incidents.
The pilots have complained about someone on the ground shining a laser at their planes, penetrating the cockpit window and flashing the pilots in the eye. The source of the light is unclear.

Police have stepped up security not only because of the threat from dissident republicans but amid concern over an increase in suspected Al Qaeda activity in Ireland.
It is feared that the two groups may be sharing expertise.
Police have set up checkpoints on routes from the republic into Northern Ireland ahead of the Maundy Thursday service on March 20 in Armagh which the Queen will attend........

Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA) — named for the Muslim general who conquered medieval Spain — is a K-8 charter school in Inver Grove Heights. Its approximately 300 students are mostly the children of low-income Muslim immigrant families, many of them Somalis.
The school is in huge demand, with a waiting list of 1,500. Last fall, it opened a second campus in Blaine.
TIZA uses the language of culture rather than religion to describe its program in public documents. According to its mission statement, the school “recognizes and appreciates the traditions, histories, civilizations and accomplishments of the eastern world (Africa, Asia and Middle East).”
But the line between religion and culture is often blurry. There are strong indications that religion plays a central role at TIZA, which is a public school financed by Minnesota taxpayers. Under the U.S. and state constitutions, a public school can accommodate students’ religious beliefs but cannot encourage or endorse religion.
TIZA raises troubling issues about taxpayer funding of schools that cross that line.
Asad Zaman, TIZA’s principal, declined to allow me to visit the school or grant me an interview. He did not respond to e-mails seeking written replies.
TIZA’s strong religious connections date from its founding in 2003. Its co-founders, Zaman and Hesham Hussein, were both imams, or Muslim religious leaders, as well as leaders of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN).
Since then, they have played dual roles: Zaman as TIZA’s principal and the current vice-president of MAS-MN, and Hussein as TIZA’s school board chair and president of MAS-MN until his death in a car accident in Saudi Arabia in January.
MAS-MN came to Minnesotans’ attention in 2006, when it issued a “fatwa,” warning Muslim taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport that transporting passengers with alcohol in their baggage is a violation of Islamic law.
Journalists whom Zaman has permitted to visit TIZA have described the school’s Islamic atmosphere and practices.
“A visitor might well mistake Tarek ibn Ziyad for an Islamic school,” reported Minnesota Monthly in 2007. “Head scarves are voluntary, but virtually all the girls wear them.” The school has a central carpeted prayer space, and “vaguely religious-sounding language” is used.
According to the Pioneer Press, TIZA’s student body prays daily and the school’s cafeteria serves halal food (permissible under Islamic law). During Ramadan, all students fast from dawn to dusk, according to a parent quoted in the article.
In fact, TIZA was originally envisioned as a private Islamic school. In 2001, MAS-MN negotiated to buy the current TIZA/MAS-MN building for Al-Amal School, a private religious institution in Fridley, according to Bruce Rimstad of the Inver Grove Heights School District. But many immigrant families can’t afford Al-Amal. In 2002, Islamic Relief — headquartered in California — agreed to sponsor a publicly funded charter school, TIZA, at the same location.
TIZA claims to be non-sectarian, as Minnesota law requires charters to be. But “after-school Islamic learning” takes place on weekdays in the same building under MAS-MN’s auspices, according to the program for MAS-MN’s 2007 convention. At that convention, a TIZA representative at the school’s booth told me that students go directly to “Islamic studies” classes at 3:30, when TIZA’s day ends. There, they learn “Qur’anic recitation, the Sunnah of the Prophet” and other religious subjects, he said.
TIZA’s 2006 Contract Performance Review Report states that students engage in unspecified “electives” after school or do homework.
Publicly, TIZA emphasizes that it uses standard curricular materials like those found in other public schools. But when addressing Muslim audiences, school officials make the link to Islam clear. At MAS-MN’s 2007 convention, for example, the program featured an advertisement for the “Muslim American Society of Minnesota,” superimposed on a picture of a mosque. Under the motto “Establishing Islam in Minnesota,” it asked: “Did you know that MAS-MN ... houses a full-time elementary school”? On the adjacent page was an application for TIZA.
In addition to the issues raised by TIZA’s religious elements, there are reasons to be concerned about the organizations with which it is connected.
Group linked to Hamas
Islamic Relief-USA, the school’s sponsor, is compared to the Red Cross in several TIZA documents. In 2006, however, the Israeli government announced that Islamic Relief Worldwide, the organization’s parent group, “provides support and assistance” to Hamas, designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist group.
Meanwhile, MAS-MN offers on its web site “beneficial and enlightening information” about Islam, which includes statements like “Regularly make the intention to go on jihad with the ambition to die as a martyr.”
At its 2007 convention, MAS-MN featured the notorious Shayk Khalid Yasin, who is well-known in Britain and Australia for teaching that husbands can beat disobedient wives, that gays should be executed and that the United States spreads the AIDS virus in Africa through vaccines for tropical diseases.
Yasin’s topic? “Building a Successful Muslim Community in Minnesota.”
TIZA has improved the reading and math performance of its mostly low-income students. That’s commendable, but should Minnesota taxpayers be funding an Islamic public school?

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Police are investigating the death of a man who is believed to be the first victim of a Republican terrorist murder in Northern Ireland for six years.
The body of Andrew Burns was found wrapped in a red blanket in a churchyard in the Irish Republic on Tuesday evening. Security sources told the Guardian yesterday that Burns, 27, had been a member of the Real IRA, the dissident republican terror group opposed to the peace process.
They said it was unclear whether he had been targeted because the Real IRA regarded him as an informer or as a result of a feud with another paramilitary organisation.
Burns, from Clady, near Strabane, was still alive when he was taken out of a car near the church in Doneyloop, Castlefin, a small village in County Donegal.
Locals reported hearing at least two shots and the police believe the victim was killed in the church graveyard. A nurse who rushed from a nearby youth club to the scene tried to resuscitate him but he died a short time later.”
