EVERETT, Wash. — A 10-year-old Everett area boy is listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Seattle after being buried in a sandbox by his playmates. The boy has been identified by his family as Cody Porter. His half brother, 30-year-old Joshua Quantrille, says Cody was playing with Quantrille's three sons and several other children on Saturday in the back yard of a home belonging to a family friend. There is a sandbox in the back yard, and Quantrille says his children told him Cody came up with the idea that they should bury him, head first, in the sand. Quantrille says the children came up with the idea from a cartoon they watch on television. Quantrille says Cody was buried about from his head to his chest. At some point, he began thrashing around, but the children apparently thought he was playing. Eventually they figured out that something was wrong. They pulled Cody out and called the adults inside the home, who administered CPR until an aid car arrived. Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies interviewed the five children who were in the sandbox with Cody.

I'm sorry, is it just paranoid me, or does something not add up in this story?

I dunno. Half brother who is twenty years older than this kid, who’s own children do the burying. Odd.

I’m wondering what were the ages of the children involved. Typical 10 year old’s who aren’t brain damaged, understand the implications of burying someone like this.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. A 4-year old would know burying somebody head first means they ain't gonna be breathing. What cartoon were they watching to get this idea ? The animated Sopranos ? Because it's either that or these kids were seriously retarded.

A relative identified the boy as Cody Porter, a fifth-grader at the Everett school.

Porter was playing with five friends, all between the ages of 8 and 10, in a backyard sandbox on Saturday morning.

“They watch a cartoon where they were like sand masters or something and they can manipulate sand or something like that. They came up with the idea that if he were to do this then he would be able to be one of them,” he said.

******

Cody and his friends were thought to be inspired by a cartoon, “Narutu,” where characters use sand as a tool and weapon. Whether inspired by a cartoon or a 10-year-old’s imagination, Cody was buried head-first to roughly his torso in a backyard sandbox.

EVERETT, Wash. - An Everett-area family is in mourning a 10-year-old boy who died after being buried alive by his playmates.

In a statement, the family of Codey Porter says he died peacefully at 3:35 p.m. on Monday with his family by his side.

The Porter family decided to donate their son’s organs. They are still formalizing plans to lay him to rest.

A memorial fund for Codey Porter has been set up through Gold Creek Community Church. The best way to donate is to log on to their Web site at www.goldcreek.org.

Hmm. I’ve seen Naruto, and there are definitely characters known as sand ninja that control sand. However, I have no idea how burying your own head in sand could have anything to do with it. That’s something this kid must have come up with on his own, and NOT taken from any scene in Naruto... Assuming the story being reported is even true, anyway. The whole Naruto angle might just be a red herring.

I lift them up in prayer as well. This young man probably thought he could pull himself out of the sand and be okay - I know boys frequently overestimate their own strength at that age. Children are children, and they will do some very dangerous things; so many young lives are lost not because they were bad, or stupid, but simply because a careless momentary thought went terribly wrong...

God comfort his family, and help them with their loss.

This is so sad, and was so preventable. My prayers are with Cody’s family and friends, who will surely miss this young man.

Um, a 30 year old thought it would be a good idea to bury someone HEAD FIRST?

No, it was the 30 year old's 8-10 year old children.
