TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- On websites touting the mind-blowing powers of salvia divinorum, come-ons to buy the hallucinogenic herb are accompanied by warnings: "Time is running out! ... stock up while you still can."
That's because salvia is being targeted by lawmakers concerned that the inexpensive and easy-to-obtain plant could become the next marijuana. Eight states already have placed restrictions on salvia, and 16 others, including Florida, are considering a ban or have previously.
"As soon as we make one drug illegal, kids start looking around for other drugs they can buy legally. This is just the next one," said Florida state Rep. Mary Brandenburg, who has introduced a bill to make possession of salvia a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Some say legislators are overreacting to a minor problem, but no one disputes that the plant impairs judgment and the ability to drive.
Native to Mexico and still grown there, salvia divinorum is generally smoked but can also be chewed or made into a tea.
Called nicknames like Sally-D, Magic Mint and Diviner's Sage, salvia is a hallucinogen that gives users an out-of-body sense of traveling through time and space or merging with inanimate objects. Unlike hallucinogens like LSD or PCP, however, salvia's effects last for a shorter time, generally up to an hour.

I meant to add — I never even heard of this drug. Sounds like a good one, though!
Can’t have that. People might drink less. Adn we all know that would impact REVENUE.
I admit it, I thought the headline was about regulating saliva. Which wouldn’t happen in George Orwell’s most dystopic nightmare.
mind blowing drugs, whole language and constructivist math, American idol....many Americans love stupidity enhancers.
I’ve seen it for sale at my local convenience store, in packets of varying potency. From what I’ve heard its effects can be quite unpleasant, actually, although you could also say that about LSD, peyote, magic mushrooms, etc.
You would think that this: “As soon as we make one drug illegal, kids start looking around for other drugs they can buy legally. This is just the next one,” would give them some clue as to the futility of chasing down this stuff, though. Something else, probably worse with nastier side-effects, will just pop up.
Thank goodness!!!!! I was afraid government was running out of things to regulate.
Saliva from humans has yielded a natural painkiller up to six times more powerful than morphine, researchers say.
The substance, dubbed opiorphin, may spawn a new generation of natural painkillers that relieve pain as well as morphine but without the addictive and psychological side effects of the traditional drug.
When the researchers injected a pain-inducing chemical into rats’ paws, 1 milligram of opiorphin per kilogram of body weight achieved the same painkilling effect as 3 milligrams of morphine.
The substance was so successful at blocking pain that, in a test involving a platform of upended pins, the rats needed six times as much morphine as opiorphin to render them oblivious to the pain of standing on the needle points.
Found the story here Natural-born painkiller found in human saliva Last year.
Semms like tobacco is worse than either of them.
I wonder how long until the idiots in DC make it a federal ban.
They sell Salvia plants when they come into season.
Thank God the government is there to protect us from this kind of thing.
Nature will find a way, LOL. I can't wait to see the regulations pushed to prevent self-induced Hypocapnia.
Tried it a while back and I have to say there is no rational reason to make this illegal. It gives you a 5 minute trip. Any allusion to impairing you for an hour is ridiculous. I wouldn’t recommend doing brain surgery an hour afterwards, but there is no physical impairment at that lenth of time. By the way, it tastes like waxy poop and yes for awhile your head will increase in size to that of a pumpkin, you might become one entity with the couch, or you may smile and feel your smile just get bigger, and bigger and bigger until it threatens to decapitate you. But you would be hard pressed to get into a dangerous situation in the time before it wears off.
I only got a gram of it and really have no desire to try it again.
Wondering if I should continue with the Lantana. I love the look and fragrance. On garden forums many stories of deadly animal poisonings and worries about children. My neighbor says it's also called the Patriot Plant.
Salvia divinorum seems to be the one in-question that is hallucinogenic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_divinorum
Lantana tends to make cattle loopy...one of my grandad’s neighbors has trouble with it in his pasture...
It's probably perennial there. I only get the real pretty plants for their flowers 'till frost kills them. It's very poisonous especially the black berry seed pods. I pinch them back to keep them going. The cows probably like the smell.
yeah, I think it is a perennial here...my landlady has plants in the yard and I always tell her that it’s a weed...
yeah, it was the seeds that were poisonous...now I remember the rest of the story...
I need to get out of the city...
Good grief! Now people who have been growing this for years in their gardens and unaware of the law change get a visit from the ninja squad? Insanity!
