18 Arrested in Lucrative Prostitution Ring Out of Staten Island (Guess who busted them)
NY Times ^ | April 8, 2004 | WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM

''This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,'' the state attorney general, Eliot Spitzer, who oversees the task force, said in a statement. ''It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring, and now its owners and operators will be held accountable.'' Investigators with the task force came across the ring while looking into the activities of a Gambino crime family gambling operation, the law enforcement official said. They had wiretapped a Gambino-linked social club on Fingerboard Road in Staten Island as part of that inquiry and saw the prostitution ring's leader, Frank Farella, 44, of Staten Island, visiting at the club, the official said.

Did Spitzer volunteer to do any “undercover”work on this case?

If so, he went from playing "Dick Tracy" to having his "Dick Traced".

That’s exactly what I thought when I first heard about this yesterday. Did Spitzer knowingly and willngly bust his favorite girls’ competitors? Also, was Spitzer ever briefed about a possible investigation of his friends, and then did he deliberaty steer his lawyers/investigators in a different direction, or worse, did he personally squelch an investigation of them?

I imagine that any and all who have criminal records from that bust, or any bust, are now contemplating appeals, seeking to have their records expunged, or lawsuits - because everything will now be open for question.

Somehow I don’t think the irony pool of Spitzer is quite yet dry.

Why wouldn't this prostitution ring be extremely leery of allowing Spitzer to utilize their services when he had a history of putting people like them in jail? And why would Spitzer allow himself to be at the mercy of a business just like the one he busted?

It would seem logical that he was working for this ring aside from utilizing its services but the transcripts didn't seem to show that. There has to be an explanation for the trust though.

Definitely eliminating the competition so he can take charge of the action and get the freebies on the side. Spitzer should be drawn and quartered.

This article is dated 2004.

Any idea if any of those arrested are still in prison for participating in the same business as Spitzer?
