WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, an Ohio Democrat who was a feisty self-made millionaire before he began a long career fighting big business in the Senate, died Wednesday night. He was 90.

Metzenbaum died at his home near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said Joel Johnson, his former chief of staff. No cause was given.

During 18 years on Capitol Hill, from 1977 to 1995, Metzenbaum came to be known as "Senator No" and "Headline Howard" for his abilities to block legislation and get publicity for himself.

He was a cantankerous firebrand who didn't need a microphone to hold a full auditorium spellbound while dropping rhetorical bombs on big oil companies, the insurance industry, savings and loans, and the National Rifle Association, to name just a few favorite targets.

I remember him best as one of the senators giving Clarence Thomas a “high-tech lynching of an uppity black who deigned to think for himself.”

"feisty self-made millionaire before he began a long career fighting big business"

And he made his money how? By buying property and making parking lots to serve the same businesses he later fought against.

Metzenbaum became wealthy through insightful investments, particularly in real estate near what became the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, which Metzenbaum and his partner, Alva "Ted" Bonda, correctly envisioned would make for extremely profitable parking lots. By 1970 he had sold his interest in his airport parking lot company for $20 million.

AKA - Hypocrite. He made his money selling to 'big business' but he didn't want anyone else to make their's the same way.

That could be the very motto of the elitist Dem party: "Mine Is Got. Yours? 'Fraid Not."

He bragged about his ability to take advantage of tax loopholes, but as senator said he sought to erase loopholes favoring the wealthy.

He got his, everybody else can rotate. What a putz.

He was a cantankerous firebrand who didn't need a microphone to hold a full auditorium spellbound while dropping rhetorical bombs on big oil companies, the insurance industry, savings and loans,

Metzenbaum once described himself as "born knowing how to make money."

He bragged about his ability to take advantage of tax loopholes, but as senator said he sought to erase loopholes favoring the wealthy.

Typical Democrat. “It is OKAY for me to be rich but not for you.

I always thought Senator Helms was Senator No. There were many times when a Senate vote went 99-1 that Helms was the one.

If I said that, I'd be accused of being anti semetic...

No great loss. Watch for the long lines along the Washington mall waiting to cue up to pass by his coffin lying in state in the rotunda of the Capitol.

If my memory is correct the departed Senator was as shill for the American Trail Lawyers Association and against Tort Reform.

During the years of my epistemological conversion to conservatism, you remember vividly the foils on the other side. The Senator was one of them.

In regards to another Freeper's post about his abilities to find tax loopholes, you would be surprised (without getting into the details) how liberals love Clintonian higher marginal rates, yet hire the best CPA/EA's/CFP's to find every deduction possible to lower their effective rate. The hypocrisy is mind-boggling.

I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying that I approved of it.
