NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- School officials have decided to go light on an eighth-grader caught with contraband candy in New Haven, Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan, an eighth-grade honors student who was suspended for a day, barred from attending an honors dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president after he was caught with a bag of Skittles candy in school will get his student council post back, school officials said.

Superintendent Reginald Mayo said in a statement late Wednesday that he and principal Eleanor Turner met with student Michael's parents and that Turner decided to clear the boy's record and restore him to his student council post.

Michael was disciplined after he was caught buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate. The classmate's suspension also will be expunged, school officials said.

The New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy, school spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said.

I want him to be able to go to this too. The one day suspension should be done in school. Have him sit and study all day or something. What about him conduct a fundraiser or something and then have him buy a bag of skittles for the entire student body. Let’s say that they have 500 students at 40 cents a pop that comes out to..200 dollars. Much more realistic type of punishment and goes with the illegal candy scenario.

I’d like to strangle whatever lib made up the term “Wellness”.
That word drives me nuts for some reason and I see it everywhere now.
I wish they all would just mind their own Wellness.

I do hope the parents retain counsel and sue all the educrats involved in this debacle. Hopefully, a jury will give the parents and the boy the assets and retirement benefits of teh educrats.

I doubt they have a case. Although I think this is a stupid rule, it is a rule just the same and he disobeyed it. He should not get a dime from this. He is wrong.

Just wait until Neil Cavuto hear about this one.

They must have received a lot of mail and calls from sensible people. They will try it again when they won’t get caught.

Looks like the Schools elaborate scheme of crushing candy distribution dealers and candy Johns
was too embarrassing to warrant death by a thousand eraser burns.

Teachers are saddened across the USA.

Are you arguing the authorities have hte right to pass any rule they so see fit? What if the rule is morally, ethically, or Constitutionally flawed?

If so flawed, can those damaged by said rule rightly expect to be “made whole”?

That's a word that should always strike fear in parents.

Over a quarter of a century ago, in my state, the state was trying to get a bill passed that would provide a "Home Health Visitor" to "ALL" (their caps) homes where there was a child age "0 to 18" ("0" = pregnant women).

The reason for "ALL" - "So as not to discriminate"

One of the rationales, in concern for the 'wellness' of the children, was to have ALL children seen by physicians of the states choice because (re family doctors) - "Doctors often fail to detect disease in well children."

Yes. Read that again.

This Home Health Visitor would also ascertain such things as the interactions of the parent and child, how clean the home was, what foods were in the house, ad nauseum...and the job qualifications for this all-knowing, all-seeing and total-control over the family "Visitor? "At least a high school education."

That proposed bill started my campaign against the state - we whipped them on that one, we went on to whip them on jailing parents for home schooling (our state is now one of the strongest in home schooling) we just kept whipping them...

But, of course, they come back year after year - they have they money to keep on...money out of our pockets.

But they continue to refer to OUR children thusly: "The children are the States greatest resource"

Be ever vigilant.

On this campus the penalty for eating a Ho is less than the penalty for eating a Ho-Ho.

Yikes! Did I mash post????

Another term that they used was “nutrition hazzard”, refering to the candy.

This little Spitzer-wannabe shouldn’t be allowed near anyone’s children.

Yeah. 5 by 5.

The State is trying very hard to raise a generation of citizens subjects who are instantly compliant to any order their "betters' give, no matter how arbitrary or evil.

This is a necessary condition for fascism, the ultimate goal of liberalism.

It is amazing to me that these school administrators seem like they don't have a life. The mark on the kid's "permanent record" will be a badge of honor.

The school "Liberal Fascists" better look out. Many states have the recall, and school boards, elected by the people are going to be told to rein in their "dogs" or face being removed from office.

Wellness can be used to run roughshod over civil liberties. You like to drink or eat fatty foods? Sorry, the wellness police will take those from you. Do you smoke? Don't even think about it. How about that motorcycle? That skiing trip? Too dangerous to your wellness.

Next step: Wellness and political thoughtcrimes.
