LOL!

Don't let the idiots at DU hear you say that, or they'll be shouting from the rooftops that a right-winger admits that guns aren't safe.

The article mentions another PD having the same problem with two Glock model 21s in 2004 (.45 ACP). Seems like these failures might be due to a combination of factors rather than simply a "defective" design or material. Would be interesting to look at the known failure data to see if there are any trends (production runs, type of service, ammo manufacturer/ type, # rounds fired before failure, component material origin etc.)

Some GAP info:

The .45 GAP Glock Model 37 The Glock 37 fires a brand-new pistol caliber, the .45 Glock Automatic Pistol, known as the .45 Glock, or more accurately, the .45 GAP. 45 Auto ammo cannot be used in the .45 GAP-caliber pistol and the .45 GAP magazine will not accept .45 ACP ammo. Also, the .45 GAP ammo should not be fired from a .45 Auto pistol
Glock’s New Model 37 .45 G.A.P. review by Gunblast.com
Glock's Model 37 Chambered in the ".45 G.A.P." (Glock Automatic Pistol)
Lethal Caliber The new Glock 37 is designed to fire the company’s newly developed .45 GAP round which offers greater lethality than the ACP round of the same caliber. However, the shorter round enables the use of a smaller grip
Introducing a new round: .45 G.A.P. Why the "45 Glock" on the new Model smaller platform pistol instead of using the existing .45 ACP? Simple... the .45 ACP's OAL is 1.260-inches, too long to fit in a small frame (Models 17, 22, et al) magazine for which the maximum cartridge length is 1.160-inches. The .45 G.A.P. is actually shorter overall than the 9 X 19mm cartridge!

GAP vs. Auto
45 Glock Automatic Pistol Cartridge (45 GAP)
The .45 Automatic The GAP takes advantage of today's stronger fully chambered guns, and better powders to make the shorter cartridge perform identically to the longer standard cartridge

I wonder if those two weapons had recently been cleaned? I bet there was a barrel brush still stuck inside. It has happened before!..........

Book 19 chapter 11 verse 45

In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was the pistol, and it was good.

And behold the Lord said, thou shalt not muck with my disciple John’s design

for it is good and it worketh. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his

weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain.

And shouldst thou muck with it and hang all manner of foul implements upon

it, and profane its internal parts, thou shalt surely have malfunctions,

and in the midst of battle thou shalt surely come to harm.

And as the ages passed, men in their ignorance and arrogance didst forget

the word of the Lord and began to profane the 1911. The tribe of the

gamesman did place recoil spring guides and extended slide releases upon the

1911 and their metal smiths didst tighten the tolerances and alter parts to

their liking, their clarity of mind being clouded by lust.

The artisans did hang all manner of foul implements upon the 1911 and did so

alter it that it became impractical to purchase. For lo the artisans did

charge a great tax upon the purchasers of the 1911 so that the lowly field

worker could not afford one. And the profaning of the internal parts didst

render it unworkable when the dust of the land fell upon it.

And lo, they did install adjustable sights, which are an abomination unto the

Lord, for they doth break and lose their zero when thou dost need true aim.

And those who have done so will be slain in great numbers by their enemies

in the great battle.

And it came to pass that the Lord didst see the abomination wrought by man

and didst cause, as he had warned, fearful malfunction to come upon the

abominations and upon the artisans who thought they could do no wrong.

Seeing the malfunctions and the confusion of men the Lord of the underworld

did see an opportunity to further ensnare man and didst bring forth pistols

made of plastic, whose form was such that they looked and felt like a brick,

yet the eyes of man being clouded, they were consumed by the plastic pistol

and did buy vast quantities of them.

And being a deceitful spirit the Devil did make these plastic pistols

unamenable to the artisans of earth and they were unable to muck much with

the design, and lo these pistols did function.

And the evil one also brought forth pistols in which the trigger didst both

cock and fire them and which require a “Dingus” to make them appear safe.

But man being stupid did not understand these new pistols and did proceed to

shoot themselves with the plastic pistol, and with the trigger cocking

pistols for lo their manual of arms required great intelligence which man

had long since forsaken.

Yet man did not repent of his evil ways, but continued to gloat over these

new pistols blaming Satan for the negligent discharges which they themselves

had committed.

And when man had been totally ensnared with the plastic pistol the Devil

didst cause a plague of the terrible Ka-BOOM to descend upon man and the

plastic pistols delivered their retribution upon men. And there was a great

wailing and gnashing of teeth in the land.

Then seeing that the eyes of man were slowly being opened and that man was

truly sorrowful for his sinful misdeeds, the Lord did send his messengers

in the form of artisans who did hear and obey the teachings of the prophet

and who didst restore the profaned 1911’s to their proper configuration, and

lo, to the amazement of men they didst begin to work as the prophet had

intended.

IMNSHO, the GAP 37 sucks.

#1. It is a plastic gun. How much, I don’t know. But, there just ain’t any substitute for a well tuned and balanced STEEL 45. Anything else is just slumming. These ultra-lites might be good to carry, but that is it.
#2. The shorter cartridge CAN drastically increase the case pressure if the bullet seats too far into the case. This is why the 9mm needs to be precisely handloaded or you could double the case pressure, resulting in an undesirable failure in the weapon. THERE IS A REASON THE .45 ACP HAS BEEN AROUND A HUNDRED YEARS.

The .45 ACP is the prefect round. Why Glock felt the need to “improve” it is beyond me. And, I can’t stand the Glock trigger either.

But, then I’m partial to Colt inspired 45’s. Beauty! Simplicity! Intimidating!

My great-uncle George barely survived such an incident. He was out rabbit hunting and accidentally got some mud down the barrel. When he pulled the trigger, the gun exploded, hitting him with several pieces of shrapnel.

Kind of a flop like 10mm.

The 10 has that "cult cartridge" thing going for it, I don't see that happening with the .45 Stubby. But what do I know, I'm a .38 Super guy.

Modern powders have improved to the point that less powder is required for the same velocity and bullet weight achieved in the original .45ACP design, resulting in lots of empty space in the cartridge. Glock created the .45GAP cartridge a couple of years ago to utilize modern powders and shorten the brass casing to eliminate this empty space. The end result is a cartridge that matches the performance specs of the .45ACP but is ~1/4-1/3 shorter in overall length. This permitted Glock to redesign their G21 and G30 .45ACP handguns and reduce the grip dimension. The new models are (largest capacity to lowest): G37, G38, and G39 in .45GAP.

Primary drawback is ammo availability.

Un-supported chambers.

Glock would probably have redesigned the chamber years ago, but it would be seen as an admission of guilt.

Unfortunately, Glock (as good as they are) still refuses to positively address the issue. I still shoot reloads (never lead) through my G22, but I’m very careful about it.

I like my DA/SA CZ 97 because it has a hammer, but Glocks are a `value’: good price, accurate and reliable. I’m saving up for one.

Are you saying that the .45ACP has been around longer than the 9mm?

Sorry.
1902 vs 1904.

9mms have never been particularly intolerant during reloading, especially with varying bullet lengths.

But, if you’re right on ONE thing (jk), it’s that the 45GAP was a mistake.

Wondering why you prefer it over the .45?

First, I'm contrary and weird.

Second, even in a lightweight Commander it recoils like a 9mm but has (properly loaded) ballistics very similar to a 125 gr. .357 magnum.

With ball ammo it's good at penetrating vehicle bodies (that's why it was used by the FBI in the 30's - and auto sheet metal hasn't gotten any thicker)

Finally it has 9+1 in a single stack 1911 package.
