June 2001 Book Review: Beyond Pearl Harbor (Sgt. J. DeShazer, the rest of the story)
Christianity Today ^ | June 2001

Posted on 03/17/2008 7:45:35 PM PDT by Tucker39

This is an excerpt from the story of Jacob DeShazer which can be found at this link: http://www.christianitytoday.com/history/newsletter/2001/jun01.html

Mitzuo Fuchida's was the voice that sent his aircraft carrier the message "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!) indicating the success of the surprise mission.

By 1945 he had attained the position of the Imperial Navy's Air Operations Officer. When he heard about a bomb dropped on Hiroshima. He flew to investigate, then sent a grim report to the Imperial Command.

On the same day, an American P.O.W. named Jacob DeShazer felt moved by the Holy Spirit to pray for peace. DeShazer had been in captivity since 1942, when, as a member of Doolittle's Raiders, he dropped bombs near Tokyo and then was forced to parachute into China. Later in Beijing, DeShazer had become a Christian. He found his heart softened toward his Japanese captors. Fuchida and DeShazer met in 1950.

DeShazer had returned to Japan in 1948 as a missionary. Fuchida had read DeShazer's testimony, bought a Bible, and converted from Buddhism to Christianity. DeShazer had recently finished a 40-day fast for revival in Japan when Fuchida came to his home and introduced himself. DeShazer welcomed the new convert and encouraged him to be baptized. While DeShazer continued to plant churches throughout Japan, Fuchida became an evangelist, spreading a message of peace and forgiveness in his native country and throughout Asian-American communities. Fuchida died 25 years ago, on May 30, 1976.

I humbly pray that many will be blessed by reading this conclusion to the DeShazer story. The story of a patriot whose duffle bag I am not worthy to carry!

Great story. Both men could have wasted the rest of their lives in hatred and bitterness.

You know, it wa the Japanese who attacked Pearl Harbor. There is no evidence of German involvement, yet we went to war with them too. Didn’t this just distract from defeating the people who attacked us?

Two days after the Pearl Harbor attack, Germany (Adolph Hitler) declared war against the United States (December 9, 1941). Britain had been driven to exhaustion by the war but was holding off the Germans. We basically had no choice. It was fight or be destroyed.

I’m going to go out on a very small limb here and say that he was being sarcastic.

I no longer assume sarcasm here on FR. Some people really mean what they post!

Let’s not forget Cpt. John Birch, Chaplain, who assisted the Doolittle Raiders with evade and escape from the Japanese, only to be killed a few days after the end of WW2 by Communist Chinese.

The John Birch Society is named for him.

Aside from the fact you misspelled “was”, what exactly did I miss? And just so you know, relatives of mine, U.S. citizens all, were merchant seamen on some of the vessels sunk by German U-boats in the Atlantic BEFORE Hitler declared war on us.
