Ten years from now, the Iraq War will be no more controversial than the Persian Gulf War, the invasion of Grenada or the invasion of Panama.
As much as progressives wish this war to be George Bushs Vietnam, history will have a different verdict. The controversy concerning the war will pass, and history will declare that although Bush did make several mistakes in the prosecution of the war, his decision to remove Saddam Hussein from power was ultimately a morally sound one.
Iraq and Vietnam cannot be made equal in the rational mind. Vietnam dragged on for years, involved a draft that divided a nation, and ended thanks to political cowardice. Iraq has been a relatively short war, with no draft to compel young liberals to fight, and it has been led by a President who has shown no cowardice whatsoever, even in the face of plummeting poll numbers. If John McCain becomes President, the war will continue to be led by a man of intestinal fortitude.
The war is clearly winding down. The surge has been flawless. Our mission is all but complete. One certainly wishes victory had been achieved sooner, but victory is clearly on the horizon now.
It will shock progressives to the core when history begins to give Bush credit for his leadership in this war. Only the Gore Vidal types will insist that Bush was a warmonger; the rest will conclude that while Bushs errors were numerous, he was more right than wrong in the totality of his decisions.
At worst, Bushs decision to liberate Iraq will be as fiercely debated by future generations as President Trumans efforts to end World War II. The committed left will always loathe Trumans actions; nonpartisans will always give him the benefit of the doubt.

Why does anyone think this: I remember MR MCCAIN’s water boarding stand, close GITMO stand..He will fold like a wet paper bag while reaching across to the likes of Kennedy and
Finegold just as he has these last 6 yrs.

If McBoob has his way, our troops will still be there, still fighting, still waiting for the Iraqi troops to be able to take over.
