Hundreds of embryonic stem-cell lines that provide hope for treating devastating disorders such as sickle cell anemia and Down syndrome are available for research but are off-limits to federal scientists because of White House restrictions, scientists said Wednesday.
The three presidential candidates - Republican John McCain and Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama - all support expanded federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research. Their actions would lift a restriction imposed by President Bush in 2001 that limits federally funded research to fewer than two dozen embryonic stem cell lines.

Wednesday's first-ever conference of the Global Forum of the International Society for Stem Cell Research brought together experts to survey the current state of stem-cell science. Although closed to the media, participants shared their hopes for expanded research at a news conference.
Embryonic stem cells have the unique ability to be converted into almost any type of cell found in the body, holding out hope that they can be used to treat everything from severed spines to diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's. But a significant minority of Americans believe that using the cells for research and to treat disease is immoral because extracting the cells destroys the embryos.
Stem cell advocates, however, counter that the embryos come from fertility clinics, which routinely throw thousands of embryos each year into the trash as medical waste.
California's stem-cell funding agency - created by a 2004 ballot measure - is moving forward and in April will announce funding of new labs at major research centers, including four in the Bay Area.
Stanford University's plans are the most ambitious, with a $200 million building planned. Stanford has promised $150 million of its own money and is asking the state for $50 million. About 200 scientists would work there.

“What we do not prohibit, we subsidize”
Ron Paul 2007
Well, at least the death-mongers admit that embryos have "value."
It’s not a new era for stem cells, it’s a new era for federal stem cell pork.
Kalifornia is bazillions in deficits and they expect to be able to suck billions from taxpayers for putting human embryos in Waring blenders?

The stem cell lines have been available for research
Just not federally funded
They’re just chomping at the bit...
$6 Billion goes a long way, huh?
If they deflect just 1 penny of federal funds
from energy research
we should scream bloody murder
I miss President Bush already.
This is an outright lie. Only federally-funded embryonic stem cells are off-limits, and there are no venture capitalists that want to put their money down on research that, so far, has shown nothing but failure.
The poor results to date have been the result of a lack of Federal funds.
The cell likes know who is paying the researcher, perhaps.
"Provide hope."
So they don't actually do those things.
Human stem cells derived from fat, bone marrow, placentas, and cord blood are making progress and even initial clinical trials. If these researchers are so eager to do stem cell research, start with the existing alternatives.
And turning adult cells into stem cells then back into what you want it to grow into hasn’t caused the cancer the “pure stem cells” have.
Had the experiments with embryonic stem cells of other higher non-human mammals been done and the techniques and goals perfected, this argument to get into human embryonic stem cells now might be harder to reject in the public forum. As it is, these scientists are seeking the gravy train more than the cures because they haven’t done the non-human experiments to perfect the methodologies. That disregard for the usual procedures tells you these scientists do not consider the embryonic aged human to be worthy of human status, just worthy of exploitation for human tissues. The old saw ‘follow the money’ is still accurate today.
Promise people that they can live forever and they will spend every cent of OPM that they can. These “scientists” should be imprisoned as you would any con artist.
That’s a good question. Why are people allowed to commit fraud if they pretend to be scientists?
