WEST COVINA, Calif. -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence. She was shot to death.
The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said. "Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.
Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.
The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.
Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.
While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.
When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."
The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.
Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said.
Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.
No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.
As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.
“At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry,”
What’s wrong with this sentence?
When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.
Way to go California. Your unconstitutional gun laws have taken yet another life.
All their tofu, bean sprouts and orgy butter won’t bring her back now.
9/11 dispatch to the police is a body collection service. You decide whether it is YOUR body or the body of the aggressor which is collected. If you think a good lawyer is expensive, you obviously haven't had to pay for a burial lately.
Not to mention how smoothly and efficiently the relevant governmental agencies will be able to put this all behind us.
Only call 911 to get on record as to the fact you are in imminent danger of grievous bodily harm, then be ready to handle the situation yourself.
If you value your life and the lives of your family, anything else is folly.
This woman could have armed herself and defended herself under California law. I don’t agree with the restrictive weapons laws in California, but you can’t blame this death on them.
The eventual crackdown was in response to their armed harassment of the police and the legislature.
Truth. I live in Los Angeles and I’m armed. She could have been armed as well.
911 is an alert system to direct cops to the dead body and the dead body won’t be mine! ;)

I was once in a convenience market about 10pm at night. An armed thug came in, robbed the till, then locked me, the cashier and the manager in a store room in the back of the store. There was a phone in the room, so the manager immediately got on the phone with the police. 4 calls and 2 hours later, the cops finally showed up to let us out. Forget about calling the cops, they’ll just wait until the danger is passed. I have zero confidence in the police. Their only purpose is to document a crime after the fact, man speed traps, and grow fat on donuts.

Without a weapon to defend herself, 911 is just “dial a prayer”
Screw the laws, everybody should be armed & let the courts & juries decide what happens.
However, the murder was successful.
I guess people are just going to have to start carrying a gun on their person inside their own homes.
That lady chose not to arm herself...not CA.

Wow, talk about hitting the nail on the head!
