Obama: 'This is not a crackpot church'
Politico.com ^ | 3/23/08 | Ben Smith

Carrie Budoff Brown sends over the transcript from Obama's appearance, airing tomorrow, on the Michael Smerconish Show on 1210 AM WPHT in Philadelphia, from audio the show provided.

In the interview, Obama says he's talked to Wright in the past about "some of his views," and defends Trinity, saying "This is not a crackpot church."

Smerconish is a conservative talker who's been defending Obama's race speech.

OBAMA: I will be honest with you that I didn’t have that many conversations with him over the last year just because I have been so busy. I haven't been going to church. I wasn’t hearing a lot of these comments. The ones that are most offensive are ones that I never knew about until they were reported on. I had had conversations with him in the past – in fact from the day I first met him -- about some of his views. Understand this, something else that has not been reported on enough is despite these very offensive views, this guy has built one of the finest churches in Chicago. This is not a crackpot church. Witness the fact that Bill Clinton invited him to the White House when he was having his personal crises. This is a pillar of the community and if you go there on Easter on this Easter Sunday and you sat down there in the pew you would think this is just like any other church. ... So I don’t want to suggest that somehow, the loops you have been seeing typifies the services all the time. That is the danger of the YouTube era. It doesn't excuse what he said. But it gives it some perspective.

Much to my regret and distaste, I'm pretty close to agreeing with them on that.

For example, In 1983, on 20th anniversary of death of JKF, I interviewed a bunch of Texas high school kids from a rather decent school on what they thought about the late president.

65% had no idea who he was.

My videogrpaher was a Black man. He whispered to me, “Ask the Black kids about Martin Luther King.” (This was 15 years after Dr. King's death.)

65% of the Black kids had no idea who MLK was.

We were both very quiet in the ride back to the bureau. I was sad. He was angry.

Ruf’s only comment was, “He gave his life so they could go to that school.... and they have no idea who he was. Their parents deserve a whuppin... and I think I'm going to get very drunk tonight!”

I didn't blame him.

“Obama Hate’s White People”

And his liberal white mother was the first to begin teaching the idea.

Now he claims to have talk with Wright about some of his views. Why didn't he say so a week ago? Oh, he expected to be able to shut up us crackers by saying his grandmother, those of us who voted for Ronald Reagan, and most of cracker KKK-America are racists. Since that didn't work, now he has to distance himself from Racist Wright.

Hint: Whenever a person has to say: This organization is (or I am) not a crackpot (or crook). You can be pretty certain the organization or individual IS whatever it is alleged not to be.

“...This is a bunch of slick con men getting tithes out of people by telling them that they are not responsible for all the illegitimacy, the drug use, the hate. the crime, the illiteracy in their neighborhoods.... it is all Whitey’s fault.”

People STUPID and RACIST enough to attend this “church” deserve to be ‘had.’

If the church is not “crack pot,” the parson and his gnomes need be in prison on charges of sedition. My white skin crawls at the though of that gang preaching for my destruction.

This is not a crackpot church. Witness the fact that Bill Clinton invited him to the White House when he was having his personal crises. This is a pillar of the community and if you go there on Easter on this Easter Sunday and you sat down there in the pew you would think this is just like any other church. ...

Oh for cryin' out loud. Bill Clinton also used Jesse Jackson as a spiritual advisor during the Lewinski scandal. The same Jesse Jackson who fathered an illegitimate child with his own aide, Karen Sanford! And if Obama doesn't think it's "crackpot" that his church's Easter sermon today was about Pastor Jeremiah Wright's deserved exposure, calling it a "lynching" comparable to the crucifixion of Christ, then Obama is not only a Marxist, he might be clinically insane.

Suuure, we've all taken Otis' and Wright's comments completely out of context. Pfft.

Obama-lama-ding-dong is happy enough for YouTube when it suits his own purposes. But let it illustrate just WHO the con men are that he associates with...by using their very own words....and it's a "danger".

Got a little democrat duplicity laid on there, huh Hussein?

Obama: 'This is not a crackpot church'

Your words, Mr. Obama...

From what I hear, this is a racists black supremacist church. With an added heavy communist streak.

And Jesse took Karen to the “spiritual healing” sessions with Clinton, and Karen sat in on them, while she was eights months pregnant with Jesse’s baby!

I guess the “all black churches are like that” explanation only worked on some white liberals charmed with O’s race speech.

Problem it is not just SOME! Thousands are still showing up at his rallies! 12,000 or more at the Richardson endorsement. And it will only continue as this all dies down and his so called speech on race gets praised more and more by the MSM!

Obama does belong to a crackpot church, indeed. Jeremiah Wright sounds more like something comeing from a bar room. I only hope that people do not think that all black people are like that. Some of the finest Christians that I have ever known and loved are black people, for whom I have the greatest respect. I do not think that Jeremiah Wright could have the respect of anyone except another evil person.

Exactly! And Obama thinks the fact that there's a picture of Clinton shaking hands with Wright at the White House proves that neither Obama's pastor nor his church are crackpots? What a clueless maroon.

I don't understand why the majority don't focus on what you mentioned. Patriotism.

A LOT (most is actually more accurate) of people are losing focus on the critical point here. A person is running for President of the United States of America, and this person has exhibited anti-American gestures in the past, so has his wife. Now he is caught out in the whole Rev Wright thing that supports the possibility that these minor gestures have substance behind them. So, someone who is anti-American, anti-establishment is running for President. Sure, the whole race thing is also relevant, very relevant. But to me it seems it has all been used to remove focus from the obvious, this guy hates America and wants to lead it. He wants the most powerful political position on the planet, but he hates the very thing he wants to control, or at the very least, he is sympathetic to those who do.

Why have people lost focus? Forget the whole race thing for a minute. The mere fact that he is sympathetic to anti-American hate and those who preach it is a show stopper, the end game for him and those who support him.

They are, unfortunately. They voted in democratic control last year. What does that say about us ?
