The Selected Civil War Photographs Collection contains 1,118 photographs. Most of the images were made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects. The collection also includes portraits of both Confederate and Union officers, and a selection of enlisted men.
An additional two hundred autographed portraits of army and navy officers, politicians, and cultural figures can be seen in the Civil War photograph album, ca. 1861-65. (James Wadsworth Family Papers). The full album pages are displayed as well as the front and verso of each carte de visite, revealing studio logos, addresses, and other imprint information on the approximately twenty photographers represented in the album.

Fwiw, "burnsides" and "Burnside whiskers" are often found in post-War fiction and nonfiction.
Excellent and timely as researching my GG Gramps who served in the Michigan Light Artillery and then Regiment G of the 7th Mi. Cavalry.

Thanks. I’m often amused at how even non-candid photos (and in that era, exposure times were longer) have nearly everyone staring off in different directions in a contrived way. I wonder when the current habit of having everyone look at the camera took off?

One of my first memories was spending time waiting in the clinic at a children's hospital. They had one of those very old stereo viewers with the post card sized images you put in the end.

Part of Custer’s Brigade at Runnel’s Farm [Gettysburg], and until Custer took command of the 3d Cav. Division.
His rifle from the war is still in the family, in a branch other than my own.
His son, also named Sebastian, is second from the right in this picture. He died at a ripe old age when I was little, but I remember him popping popcorn for us kids in the woodburning stove in the basement of his house. He had a wood lathe down there too, and I have a couple of his turnings...a walnut lamp and some beautiful candlesticks.
This one is of another of my great-great grandfathers, Abner Chandler, who also served four years.
His father was an abolitionist leader, and as a boy on the farm in Kansas, John Brown stopped and stayed with them several times.
After the war, he was the superindendent of the famous Adams Ranch in Sac County, IA.
There's a story in the family of a traincar full of plows coming in, which all the local farmers needed to break the sod. At auction, he won the first bid and bought the whole lot. So, everyone else had to buy their plows from him. :-)
There's also a story of him taking a shot at his wife in the house they built in Odebolt. A friend of mine, who owns the house today, told me it's true, because there is a bullet hole in one of the old wooden collonades between the living room and the dining room.
haha ... now all we need is a picture of the great cavalry commanders of the Civil War in their Abrams Tanks for the Union and Confederacy.
He was last in his class in 1861.
We have a Civil War Museum here in Harrisburg, PA. I have no clue why we have it here but it has over 20,000 pictures and stuff there.
Actually, they wanted to attack Harrisburg, the railroad transportation HG at the time and also a training area. Instead, it happened at Gettysburg.
