The incident occurred at about 2:35 p.m. before the turnstiles on the Market-Frankford Line concourse at 13th and Market streets, police said.

One adult male was taken to Jefferson University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Police said homicide investigators have been summoned to the scene.

A transit police sergeant was on patrol on the eastbound platform at the time of the incident.

"While on patrol, he notices across the way, on the westbound concourse, a white male adult, about 30-years-old, and he's being confronted by four, young black males. A disturbance is obvious to him. He goes to investigate," said Capt. Steven Harold of the transit police agency.

Police said the man, who worked at a nearby Starbucks, appeared to be a in a defensive mode, as if threatened by the teens.

As the transit police sergeant approached, he radioed in that a fight was possibly in progress. The juvenile males fled down the concourse, while the man was in some type of physical distress.

SEPTA police said they took one male into custody on the concourse, near 11th Street, in connection with the case.

"The man goes into what appears to be cardiac arrest. He's unable to give any information as to what actually was transpiring," Harold said.

The man was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

Authorities said they are now trying to determine the extent of the physical altercation.

"The sergeant's view was observing some type of disturbance that the male was having with these four youth," Harold said.

Police did not release a description of any other juveniles possibly involved in the incident.

Commuters were being turned away from the westbound entrance but service on the Market-Frankford Line was not disrupted.

Philadelphia and SEPTA police have launched a joint investigation into the incident.

What a masterpiece of indistinct vagaries!

No kidding. You'd think it was some sort of difference of opinion that upset the deceased from the writing.

This article states the man was beaten to death by the “youths”:

Man dead after beating on Center City SEPTA platform

A 36-year-old man died after being severely beaten by a gang of youths inside the SEPTA concourse near City Hall this afternoon, police said.

One youth was taken into custody and police were still looking for three juveniles, possibly four, who fled the scene.

The attack happened at 13th and Market Streets on the concourse of a busy Septa stop about 2:45 p.m., said Officer Jillian Russell of the Public Affairs Unit.

SEPTA spokeswoman Sylvana Hoyos said a SEPTA police sergeant initially responded and administered CPR to the victim until medics arrived......

B*st*rds.

This is the number one reason why I tell recruiters that under no circumstances will I accept a job within the city limits.

Guess he wasn’t a typical white person; he didn’t move to the other side of the concourse.

I just got back from a business trip to Philadelphia. The area I was in wasn’t all that far from the scene of this murder, but it seemed fairly nice. The rest of Philadelphia, on the other hand, looked like an unflushed toilet.

Phila. west of Broad Street and Montgomery/Diamond (west of Temple Un, my old school), looked like an “unflushed toilet” in 1980 when I was last there.

Glad to know that the Democrats have done so much to improve it in the past 28 years (Mayor Street, Rendell, etc).

Time to flush the whole place and start over again.

Bernard Goetz (sp)? That was the guy who shot his attackers in a NY subway and got sued. When are we going to learn?

I used to ride the El when I worked in Philly. The most unsafe time to ride was when the thugs, er students, got out of school. Freaking animals.

After discussing Obamma-Mania with the YOUTHS, the white guy suffered SEPTA-SHOCK!

Please, keep moving. Nothing else to see.

I was about two blocks away at a trade show when this happened.

I’d been thinking about bringing a handgun with me on this trip. PA recognizes my state’s permit, but I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to check it on the airplane, etc. I think this is the last time I’ll make that decision.

I’ve been to Philadelphia a few times on business. A very scary city. One time I walked over to the Liberty Bell at around 1:00 PM and I was followed by a group of five or six young black guys. When I turned left, they turned left; when I turned right, they turned right. The Liberty Bell was pretty much deserted (stupid me, I thought there’d be some City employee there to give a brief, bored lesson on the thing), so, instead of paying it my respects, I passed it up, picked up my pace, and headed back towards my hotel, blending in with some other pedestrians. I looked back at the gang and they had stopped, but they were watching me as I continued on my way. Like I say, a very scary city.

I went to Temple in the late sixties, and used to drive to the train station and then walk from the N. Broad station. Can you imagine doing that now? We used walk all over the city, day or night, go to a movie, the orchestra, dinner, a show, and take the train home. Someone needs to take a look at what has changed.

The City of Philadelphia may not recognize your permit even if PA does. Democrats don’t have to follow any rules.
