McCain: Obama 'Absolutely' Qualified to Be President
Wash Post ^ | 4/6/08 | Zach Goldfarb

Posted on 04/06/2008 8:57:27 PM PDT by pissant

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, said Sunday that the leader for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Barack Obama, would be "absolutely" qualified to be president, should the voters elect him. But, he said, "I believe that my talent and my background and my experience, which has led to my judgment, ... qualifies me more."

In his first Sunday talk show appearance since locking up the GOP nomination last month, McCain criticized Obama and others for making too much of his comment that the United States could remain in Iraq for 100 years, or a period similar to the length of the U.S. presence in Germany and South Korea.

"Senator Obama and anyone who reads that [comment] knows that I didn't think we were in a 100-year war," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

Days after going to Memphis to mark the 40th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, McCain repeated that he "was wrong" to vote in 1983 against establishing a federal holiday to honor King. He added, as he did Friday, that he thought better of his mistake in time to back such a holiday in his home state of Arizona.

McCain also confirmed that he would meet next week with Secret Service officials next week and expects to have agents protecting him "shortly thereafter." McCain previously had refused such protection.

Well, he’s over 35, he’s a native-born American citizen, he’s been resident in the country the last several years...yep, I have to agree. Barry is qualified. Granted, he’s a twit, but there’s nothing in the Constitution that bars twits from public office. As you may have already noticed.

Oh, you know I wish he hadn’t said it. Here’s to hoping he nominates someone sane and genuinely conservative, like Fred Thompson. And then pulls out, leaving Thompson as the Republican Presidential nominee.

Under the United States Constitution he is absolutely qualified to become President, and so am I.

You Nailed It!

But, he said, "I believe that my talent and my background and my experience, which has led to my judgment, ... qualifies me more."

He then went on stick his foot in it some more, saying that JFK could be deemed not qualifified under McCain's original logic:

You could make an argument maybe that Jack Kennedy was not, quote, "qualified" in 1960 as opposed to Richard Nixon. The voters decided on Jack Kennedy. So I can't dictate what the voters will decide. All I can do is match my credentials and my knowledge and background up against Senator Obama's or Senator Clinton. That race is not decided yet. And I will gladly stand not only on that background and experience, but my vision and my ability to lead this country in difficult times.
Here is the whole transcript.

Is Obama a native-born US citizen, 35 years of age or older, who has lived in the United States for at least 14 years?

Then he’s qualified.

Quit carrying the water for McAmnesty.

Given his past comments about how Hillary would make a GOOD president, it can be correctly inferred that is not what he meant.

McCain is worthless. He makes Bob Dole and Jack Kemp look like the Barbarian Twins. No guts. Playing the nice guy routine does NOTHING to help his own cause. If Obama is ‘absolutely’ qualified to run for President, then we should all vote for him, then. From now on, i will call him ‘Schmuck-ain.’

That’s not what he said. He said of the American people make the decision to elect Obama, than they believe he is qualified.

"Please. McCain’s just trying to be classy."

Hope so. Or that it's a comment of the "please don't throw me in the briar patch" variety. If it's sincere, he's addled.

Should McCAin have said Obama is absolutely not qualified to be POTUS?

Yeah, that line of attack really worked out for Hildabeast.

There would be a firestorm unlike any, 100 times worse than Jeremiah Wright Debacle, if McCain were to make a stupid statement like that.

All it would do is cause Dems to Unite behind Obama and invigorate them even more. McCain would be portrayed as a Racist. Paster Hagee and other would be used to portray McCain as a Bigot. That would be the end of him and his campaign.

Yes. But that remark is going to come to bite him in the rear. He’s constantly giving ammo to the enemy. He should keep his powder dry, and his yap shut.

You're right. The difference between McCain & the leftist Democrats is this. McCain thinks America was an evil, diabolical place until the 1960s. But thanks to all those liberal movements during that decade, America became a tolerable place to live. We still have to do more (amnesty, for example), but we're on the path to multicultural utopia. We should continue down that path, and also invade some other countries if that's what's necessary to make them into “multicultural democracies” just like us.

The Democrats think America is still an evil, pathetic place. Yes, the sixties radicals helped correct some of the Founding Fathers’ wickedness, but really, America is just too depraved to ever be an example for anyone. We therefore should just wreck the entirety of Western Civilization as fast as possible and be done with it. We shouldn't invade other countries, or even defend ourselves.

Is McCain mulling over a McCain/Obama ticket instead of McCain/Hillary?

Please. McCain’s just trying to be classy. And he knows that he has to be, if he’s to keep the Democrats tearing themselves apart, instead of tearing into him.

You nailed it.
