Your children could be paying double the rate in taxes paid by today’s American workers in ten years but Republicans want to stop this trend in its tracks.
The latest effort to restore fiscal responsibility comes in the form of a Spending Limit Constitutional Amendment. The Republican Study Committee (RSC) is targeting out of control federal spending in order to equalize federal government spending with national economic growth.
Their goal is to decrease the burden on American families, so that the budget does not increase more than the collective incomes of those families. RSC members at a press conference yesterday spoke passionately of constituent families in their districts who are in real distress due to tax hikes that rob them of hard-earned pay.
Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) said in the past 15 months, the Democrat Congress has “done nothing to reign in spending.”
The RSC chose Tax Day to introduce the proposed amendment to punctuate the importance of lower taxes and decreased federal spending on entitlement programs and other excessive spending agendas.
“Today’s decision will affect tomorrow’s destiny,” Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). “We are the cusp of a budget crisis…and we want the next generation to inherit a prosperous America.”
About ten members of the RSC represented the amendment at the press conference, including earmark reform leader Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.).
Hensarling reminded listeners that “as bad as Republicans are, Democrats are a thousand times worse," not only on spending but by raising taxes every time they can. He said there are many budgetary concerns on the agenda but all “pale in comparison” to the “greater concern” for a “future where our children have their taxes doubled.”

One more excerpt: RSC members agreed that federal spending has become so ridiculous that dramatic action must be invoked. The amendment, described as “simple and straightforward” by Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), bars federal spending from exceeding 20% of GDP.
Forty years of working to get them the majority and in their ten year they did nothing but expand government more then FDR.
Those are the facts.
Ask them why we should believe them now?
I saw the title of this thread and at first thought I’d had too much to drink.
They still have problems among Republican ranks. The RSC is making an effort. The leadership doesn’t always support them. Can you believe the ones who are working on this, and Jeff Flake who is fighting earmarks? They may get something done. You have to start somewhere.
They should have done much more when they were in the majority, I agree.
This is something right isn’t it? Sometimes the good guys do win, and I hope for the sake of my sons that they win this one.
They could write this constitutional amendment, cast it concrete, wrap it in hardened steel, get it passed by the congress and the required number of states and they’d still figure loopholes to get around it.
Spending is a political disease. It affects Pubs and RATS equally.
The only solution, IMHO, is a massive influx of new blood. Ain’t gonna happen.
I can understand your reaction. This is the Republican Study Committee, not the leadership in the Congress. Although the RSC does show leadership in their own way. This isn’t the minority leader doing this. The leadership has been fighting against earmark reform.
It is encouraging to see that they are picking up sponsors on this.
The title is somewhat misleading, you are correct on that. It is the title that the author used. They haven’t done it yet, but I hope they actually do rein in spending.
I'm sick of seeing this editing mistake in print - is there no one left in America who knows how to spell "rein in"? No journalist who has ever sat on a horse? ;)

This is pandering before the election. They had their shot at reducing spending when they controlled congress. We see where that went. Plus, this has less than zero chance of being enacted so pardon me if I’m cynical.

20% is disgusting. Let’s try implementing the 10th Amendment and cut it to less than 10%.
I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the idea our country will tip into third world status within the next five to six years.

How will the country survive this?
What will be necessary to tip it back?

You might want to consider their history. Wikipedia isn’t a great source, but they said Gingrich defunded the group when the Republicans won the majority, and this conservative group went away for awile. They were started again under a different name, so there was an effort by the Republican leadership to discourage the conservatives. The RSC has been consistent in what they have done, their concerns about spending and tax policy. They have a lovely website with a lot of information.

Most of the posts on this thread are wanting to give the conservatives who’ve been fighting the good fight the blame for the RINOs. True, there are far too many. Not every Republican is a RINO.
I thought the same thing when I read it, but my congressman was one of the founders of the RSC and he’s been fighting the conservative battle for cutting spending the entire time he’s been in Congress.
And your Congressman is in the RSC as well? Great.
Everyone seems to be realistic and devoid of hope. I understand. I lost hope when Fred finished his effort.
At this point, I’m just concentrating on keeping Georgia, and especially my little corner of it, conservative.
I’ve given up on the country, as well.
Off topic, but it is something I finally noticed after paying my taxes. How come all the deductions are for money spent? Why is there no incentive to save (though I guess we can deduct from IRAs) when it comes to paying taxes?
