Robbie Baker confessed to using the department's Fuelman car to purchase five gallons of gas, he said.
Baker worked in the jail transporting inmates.
Pearson said a person saw Baker fill up his car with gasoline using the county fuel card which he is allowed to use, but then opened the vehicle's trunk and filled a five-gallon gas can with gasoline at the county's expense.
Baker will likely face a misdemeanor charge for the theft, he said.
"This is the sixth employee I have had to put in jail," said Pearson, who is in his eighth year as Muskogee County sheriff.

The guy could have just siphoned the gas at home and he never would have been caught.
On another subject, having a state vehicle alloted to you is one of the sweetest perks you can get while employed with the government. Sadly, it is ripe for abuse.
Now we'll have a bunch of men ignoring their wives while reading it. :-)
At least they don’t wear their hair all long and shaggy; like the hippies out in San Francisco do.
I don’t think it’s that easy to siphon gas out of these newer cars. There’s usually an obstruction put in the filler tube to prevent that........
You are old.......
naw, just raised near Muskogee. :)
BTW: According to a friend of the family from a nearby town, they DO smoke mary-jane in Muskogee.
I’ve been saying it forever-the crooks and thugs are running the show!
But I remember many years ago back in the seventies when gas siphoning was going on, you could buy a wire coil shaped like a cone. You would insert it into your fuel inlet upside-down to prevent a siphoning hose from being inserted into the tank.
Yup, they did in the late 80's, not sure if they did when Merle wrote that song though, heh.
There was post within last two weeks on how thieves get around that obstruction.
They drill hole in bottom of gas tank.
American ingenuity dontcha know.
That’s the preferred method here. Not only do you lose the gas you have a screwed up tank. it seems like an awfully lot of work to me when they could just as easily become a Deputy Sheriff, lol.
no Roman sandals eh?
