Getting to Know John McCain [MUST READ!]
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 30, 2008 | Karl Rove

Posted on 04/29/2008 10:07:11 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It came to me while I was having dinner with Doris Day. No, not that Doris Day. The Doris Day who is married to Col. Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton.

As we ate near the Days' home in Florida recently, I heard things about Sen. McCain that were deeply moving and politically troubling. Moving because they told me things about him the American people need to know. And troubling because it is clear that Mr. McCain is one of the most private individuals to run for president in history.

When it comes to choosing a president, the American people want to know more about a candidate than policy positions. They want to know about character, the values ingrained in his heart. For Mr. McCain, that means they will want to know more about him personally than he has been willing to reveal.

Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."

Well, I’m sure I don’t need to telegraph it, but just so there’s no misunderstanding, I think you and all the “get another nominee” crazies are like Walter Mitty. It isn’t going to happen, and if it did it would ensure the new candidate’s defeat in November.

So take some thorazine, lie down, and wait for the paramedics.

There are four months left to save the country.

The America of 50-100 years ago is gone.
No matter which of the three becomes President, when 2008 arrives, we will be in worse shape than we are now.

No President, in the last 56 years, has reversed anything.

I bow in deference to your intellectual brilliance.

You should. Be sure and bow to mine as well. I won't ask you to kiss the ring, however, because I'm having it cleaned.

One thing about McCain leads me to believe that he will be more effective than Bush in at least one important area.

He names the enemy.

Bush still won’t name the enemy.

This seemingly simple difference is very important.

We are not in a war on “terrorism.” The war against radical Islamic extremism is THE issue of our lifetime.

“I personally don’t believe McCain was tortured.”

Comments like these make me ashamed of this country.

I guess we are a large nation and it is inevitable that a few guys like you would be part of it.

Have you since you really don’t know? LOL

Shot down in his Skyhawk dive bomber on Oct. 26, 1967, Navy flier McCain was taken prisoner with fractures in his right leg and both arms.

"John McCain served his country with honor, valor and grit."

So did John Glenn. Politics and political power corrupts even formerly respectable military men. Democrats have their choices of Socialists this election, Conservatives have no choice in this election (sorry, but Bob Barr and nobody candidate Libertarian aren't choices, either).

Just seeing some of the exchanges on here demonstrates my grave worries what he’s going to do as President in continuing to divide the party and the Conservative base. Nobody in their right mind willfully wants Obama or Hillary as President, but having them as President might finally cause this party to wake the f*** up and start to fight. We’re not doing that now. The Congressional wing isn’t even interested in winning back a majority. 2 to 4 years of McCain could see us having barely 1/3rd of Congress. Is that preferable ?
