Getting to Know John McCain [MUST READ!]
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 30, 2008 | Karl Rove

Posted on 04/29/2008 10:07:11 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It came to me while I was having dinner with Doris Day. No, not that Doris Day. The Doris Day who is married to Col. Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton.

As we ate near the Days' home in Florida recently, I heard things about Sen. McCain that were deeply moving and politically troubling. Moving because they told me things about him the American people need to know. And troubling because it is clear that Mr. McCain is one of the most private individuals to run for president in history.

When it comes to choosing a president, the American people want to know more about a candidate than policy positions. They want to know about character, the values ingrained in his heart. For Mr. McCain, that means they will want to know more about him personally than he has been willing to reveal.

Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."

Looked at your bio.... I served just like you...... oh except I wasn't in the reserves. Does that mean my opinion now trumps yours?

Please stop going around throwing the "you haven't served" mallet at those that dislike McCain.

Duke Cunningham was a "top gun", what did that mean. John Glenn is a former Marine hot shot, what did that mean. John F'ing Kerry was a multiple Purple Heart, meat eating warrior (who served in Vietnam, doncha know). What did that mean. Mr. Murtha is a "marine" in name only and what the f#@% does that mean? So stop with the former military having carte blanche.

Their service in the military doesn't mean one thing when they went to DC and got all the money, women and booze they could handle.

Now I'm not saying that I wouldn't do the same thing.... a nice looking blonde that could get me unlimited beer definitely has a lot to offer, but I'm not running for president.

Yes, very moving. John McCain was never my first choice or second, but he will do very well.

Do you really need a link to show he was a member of the gang of 14? That is common knowledge. Or a link proving he cosponsored McCain Fiengold? Do you not remember when he teamed up with his buddy tubby Teddy to push for amnesty for illegals? Did you forget about how hard he tried to raise the gas tax by $.50 a gallon? Maybe you forgot but I remember him voting against the tax cut that improved our economy.
I also remember him being a member of the Keating 5. In his own book he admits giving the Cong classified information that put many in uniform in greater danger than they were already in, just to get preferential treatment.
Anybody who knows John McCain knows he is not qualified to serve as POTUS.

Thank you for writing this, Mr. Rove. This is totally the vibe I get about Senator McCain. The men around him, who just refer to him as “John”, including Joe Lieberman and Rudy Guliani, seem to have a devotion and love for him. That is compelling to me, even if I don’t know why.

Why don’t you go and riot at the WTO with your Obama-loving buddies instead of posting here?

You are thinking of liberals...That whole Soros crowd... you know, like the one you are voting for.

This is good to know and a good read.

What McCain has shown in public and in his votes during the last 8 years is still troubling to me. I fear some of what he will do as President.

That being said, I agree with Thomas Sowell........that John McCain could not convince him to vote for McCain, only Hillary and Obama could do that.......

“People MUST be reminded of McCain’s record in politics! “

Take a look at this thread. The McCainiacs don’t CARE about his record in politics. The only thing McCain has going is the ‘war hero’ label. Let’s see how much good policy comes out of that.

April, 2006 SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R), ARIZONA: “ My friends, I’ll offer anybody here $50 an hour if you’ll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for whole season. So — OK? Sign up. OK. When you sign up — you sign up, and you’ll be there for the whole season. The whole season, OK? Not just one day. Because you can’t do it, my friend. Sign up.”

Sounds to me like we have a real leader for a candidate. He had my vote anyway, but now he has my heart.

Go back to DU?

I’ve been here over 9 years.

You aren’t here a month.

If character means so much to you, answer this: why did McCain shut down the POW/MIA investigation in ‘92 along with the traitor John Kerry? This concerned people he was in prison with or whom he knew.

Now, run along before the Viking kitty patrol finds you.

This is awesome. If it isn't just some puffed up political schpiel, then it can be read with admiration by anyone of has a true sense of character and morality.

Thank you, John McCain.

Well, all is not lost for you and the others...you can always emigrate to Venezulea or Cuba.

Been there....I'd love to go back now. I'd also like to take about 11 of my buddies that I was there with, some sat-com and unlimited cash. I wouldn't emigrate but I'd sure have some fun.

It's amazing what a small group of individual can stir up with motivation and cash.

If that was meant as a slam to me for not getting down on my knees and giving McCain the Lewinsky treatment, I'll leave that for you and your fellow McCain supporters.

I could care less about who is President at this point. The congress and the senate are the key.

McCain was a pilot.

McCain got shot down and taken prisoner.

He sucked it up and withstood a lot of treatment that I'm not sure I could have tolerated.

He's got two sons that have followed him into the service. One being a Marine and the other a squid. (meant with humor not condemnation)

He's also spouted off about economics, health care and other issues using the MSM as his education and not the principles of a limited republican form of government based on the rule of law, delineated governmental powers and the natural law theory of an individuals rights.

Tell me how you square his "tax cuts for the rich", "global warming tax proposals or fees", "illegal immigration amnesty" and "McCain-Feingold limiting free speech" with a person that will lead in a manner that insures conservative principles?

How about you go to Cuba or Venezuela? Ask them how they feel about global warming, tax cuts for the rich and limiting free speech. You might be surprised by the similarities.

Really?

Then why didn’t you vote for John Kerry?

He served.

And he saw active duty, whereas Bush was stateside.

So tell me again, how service to your county trumps your position on the issues?

but I seem to recall that his bravery was almost alone on his list of good qualities.

well, then i suppose we can say they share that one quality for certain... but sharing one quality does not make them so much a like... otherwise we can say Benedict Arnold and George Washington were just the same... i gathered that McCain's qualities were more than just bravery from this one article... i am not trying to get anyone to vote for McCain... i can barely do it myself... but to equate McCain with Benedict Arnold is silly...
