Woman recalls life in polygamist sect

By David Perlmutt
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — She was raised by her father and his three wives, surrounded by 12 siblings.
There was no TV, no radio. At school, she was taught that man never landed on the moon. She and other girls in the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were required to "keep sweet," free of jealousy or anger, or risk beatings or humiliation.
And by the time Kathy Jo Nicholson turned 14, she was sewing her wedding dress, knowing that any day she could be thrown into marriage with a man three times her age.
Nicholson never finished that dress. Instead, she began to question her faith and, at 18, walked out on it.
All those memories flooded back after authorities removed more than 500 women and children — she knows many — from a Texas compound run by the men who once controlled her life.
"I am happy for the children, though I know they're terrified," said Nicholson, 37, who has lived in Charlotte with her husband and two sons since 2004. "But, now, they have a chance.
"Their mothers, too, have a chance if they'll just grab onto the hands that are reaching out. I know they're conflicted. I know the mind control."

By the way, she was 14 working on a wedding dress - she didn’t leave until she was 18...

So by her own admission she ‘wasn’t forced into a marriage with an older man against her will’.

Legally, her consent is irrelevant. It's called statutory rape. And if it is a polygamous "marriage", it's not a legal marriage, therefore there is no consent to be given by the parents of the minor. String the perp up with Warren, maybe they will get married to each other. Who knows?

Coward Shurtleff who hasn't the nerve to enforce the law in Utah weasles out on supporting the law enforcement in Texas.

How about if you start a new FLDS thread that you post a link to it over here on the daily thread?

I've been trying to do that..thanks for the reminder.

The FLDS argument will not hold up

I was just going over the Bishop’s List. There were less than 200 hundred children listed as living at R17 (YFZ Ranch) in March 2007. I wonder where the other 250+ kids came from — they all couldn’t be new infants. Where are their parents?

And, is this why the Judge would not just give those kids to whomever "claimed" to be parents?

BTW, are you able to compile a chart that makes more sense than trying to read that pdf file?

“So by her own admission she ‘wasn’t forced into a marriage with an older man against her will’.”

Ahhh, but someone forced into “working on a wedding dress.”

In other words, she was beig conditioned for the command, whether it came or not.

Nice try.

Google “Winslow, -Ben and FLDS” and see how many hits you get. Is this guy a member or sympathetic Mormon?

“Coward Shurtleff who hasn’t the nerve to enforce the law in Utah “

Because his career would end immediately, if he did.

Yep, and Syphilis kept that incarceration from being the slap on the hand it might have been, since there wasn’t an effective treatment for it. He was going to die anyway, and that way he got to wallow in his pain rather than distracting himself and infecting other people.

Well, about 100 of them are 2 & under...so 50 of them were probably born in the past year.

Other than that, it was probably "Here come the brides."

"In the media, our lifestyle and beliefs get painted as abusers and people who commit welfare fraud,"

Um, because it is true? Perhaps the welfare is not outright fraud, but these women are not really married and can qualify for aid...the men produce numerous children and then "bleed the beast" to provide for them. It is an insult to taxpayers who are responsible and support their own children.

And the abuse? Read Carolyn Jessup's book if you don't believe those kids are abused.

Fortunately, Texas is not giving the FLDS abusers a chance to flee with abused children in tow. That’s exactly what Utah and Arizona did.

They have been continually bringing new families to YFZ, as construction and thus available housing progressed. And I wouldn’t be surprised if records showing wives under age 16 weren’t squirreled away in a safer place.
