Obama Says Teamsters Need Less Oversight (More Fraud, Less Feds Barry?)
wall st journal ^ | 5/5/2008 | Brody Mullins and Kris Maher

Posted on 05/05/2008 9:33:44 AM PDT by milwguy

Sen. Barack Obama won the endorsement of the Teamsters earlier this year after privately telling the union he supported ending the strict federal oversight imposed to root out corruption, according to officials from the union and the Obama campaign.

It's an unusual stance for a presidential candidate. Policy makers have largely treated monitoring of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as a legal matter left to the Justice Department since an independent review board was set up in 1992 to eliminate mob influence in the union.

So, I get it now, Senator.

The "TEAMSTERS" need LESS federal oversight,,,

while the drug companies and oil companies need MORE federal oversight, regulation and taxes.

Of course.

The WORKERS need less oversight. In fact, CORPORATIONS must be regulated to give the WORKERS more power.

Simple Marxism.

Power to the people! Right on, Brother!

I haven’t heard such crap since I live in the SF Bay Area.

The Justice Dept is the oversight of the Teamsters. Not the FBI, but Justice. Obama wants to get rir of that. This guy throws his grandma under the bus, runs over Rev Wright with a Mack Truck, and now sells out to orgainized crime. Been a good couple weeks for the Messiah.

If Obama does win the election, the Teamsters could be pretty useful dealing with demonstrators, as they have been in the past beating up anti-Clinton demonstrators in Philadelphia.

The Teamsters Union was being monitored by the govt long before 1992, maybe under a different agency? I know, because I was a member who was fighting for Ron Carey and Teamsters for a Democratic Union.

Talked to a Teamster the other day. I asked him why the Teamsters vote for DemocRATS, when the Dims killed 10,000 Teamster jobs when they voted to kill drilling in Anwar, which the Teamsters were lobbying for.

He didn't have a clue.

The Teamsters Union was being monitored by the govt long before 1992, maybe under a different agency? I know, because I was a member who was fighting for Ron Carey and Teamsters for a Democratic Union.

and Comrade Paff's boy Ron Ca$H & Carey was quite the reformer ... looted the IBT treasury ... the 'reformer'/FBI informant Ca$ & Carey made $156 million in reserves disappear while taking in over $110 million each year

Grand portions going to 'voter education' to get the Clinton's elected

then he got caught cheating in one of the most corrupt and expensively run election in modern history

His fellow travelers all leftists and SDS (like Harvard SDS Chairman Michael Ansera) leftovers from the 60s

How bad is pricey government oversite when Hoffa Jr wins as a reform candidate to reform the reformers.

The Oversite board under Freddie 'the Fixer' Lacey was caught conspiring with other overpaid former federal prosecutors protecting Ca$h and Carey who he referred to in one of his letters as "... a bum but he's our bum"

Thanks again Rudy

It’s worse than you think. The Democratic Party, representing Teamsters Unions, are planning to re regulate the transportation industry. The fees (spelled t-a-x) will put many small trucking companies, not unionized, out of business.

At the time Ron Carey looked like a good guy. I was working at JFK airport and belonged to one of the most corrupt of the Teamsters Union. I know what you mean about the lefties, these little short, sickly looking guys would show up at the meetings. One tried to introduce abortion rights as part of the TDU platform. The guy who got us involved was named Andy, he was a professor at NYU. If I recall correctly, the truck driver who started TDU was not happy with it being taken over by the left.

Sam Theodus ........ a great guy a great man ... out of Cleveland

But Sam a would never embrace or join TDU

The Federal oversite (IRB ~ the-not-so Independent Review Board) and the special prosecutors and assorted hacks have taken more money from the union coffers than any gangster ever dreamed.

the succession of overpaid empty suits (William Webster, Fred Lacey, Crandel from the UMW ... and lets not forget the Tom Puccio franchise in LU 295 or Ed Steir in 560) and their hangers-on and staffs chose to keep FBI informants like Carey and Johnny Morris in power because they dribbled information to them to avoid any heavy lifting

they're all a waste of skin and just on the gravy train for about 20 years now

all of that dues money and PAC funds become a volatile mix when you add politicians

I guess that the "TEAMSTERS" don't qualify as a 'special interest'!!!

But then again, according to Senator B. (whose middle name must NEVER be spoken) Obama, I guess that the American Medical Association, American Bar Association (lawyers in particular), teachers unions, steel unions, auto unions, the gay lobby, the feminist lobby, etc,,,

are NOT 'special interests'!!

Hah! Shep just discussed this story in the context of private promises that become public to the detriment of the candidate...LOL!

In their quest to have Hillary as the nominee, they overlooked this little tidbit:

Finally, per Politico's Ben Smith, it seems Clinton also believes that the oversight has run its course. Here's what she said in March: "I am of the opinion that based on what I’ve seen over years of observation, this union has really done a tremendous job in turning itself around. That’s my observation. At some point the past has to be opened. If you screw up in the future, that’ll be a new day, right? That’s the way the system works. But you gotta -- you can’t go around dragging the ball and chain of the past. And I think that’s true for anybody, any organization, any individual, you know, and so I would be very open to looking at that and to saying, what is it we’re trying to accomplish here? And seeing what the answers were because at some point turn the page and go on."
