Barack Obama's Fuzzy Gas-Tax Math
IBD ^ | May 7, 2008

Energy Policy: Barack Obama thinks a federal gas-tax holiday is a political ploy. But when he was in the Illinois Senate, he voted for a state holiday three times. These days, he prefers a holiday on gasoline production.

In an ad that aired before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, candidate Obama said: "I'm here to tell you the truth. We could suspend the gas tax for six months, but that's not going to bring down gas prices long-term. You're gonna save about 25, 30 dollars, or half a tank of gas."

Speaking in Indianapolis before the ad was aired, Obama threw different numbers to a swooning crowd. "I know it polls well," he said, "but here's the truth: It would save the average family 30 bucks over the course of three months — $28, or more precisely, 30 cents a day — which is less than (a) cup of coffee at the 7-Eleven."

If that's his idea of math, we don't want him in charge of the federal budget or U.S. energy policy. So which is it — $30 over three months or over six? And he must think we don't drive very much.

The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents a gallon, so accepting his 30 cents a day figure, he must think we use a little more than a gallon and a half a day, including weekends, driving to our jobs, to the mall, to our kid's soccer games, even to the 7-Eleven.

If he's talking $30 over six months or 180 days, he's talking about 16 or 17 cents a day, which means he thinks the average American family uses less than a gallon a day.

You aren't supposed to think about Obama. You are just supposed to believe in him.

I use approx 40 gallons of regular gas per week. Thats 18.5 cents times 40 gallons = $7.40 per week saved or $1.06 per day saved or 90 days = $95.15 saved.
Man oh man and Barry thinks thats $30 - huh?

"Obama said: "I'm here to tell you the truth. We could suspend the gas tax for six months, but that's not going to bring down gas prices long-term."

His math may suck but the above statement is just the plain ole truth.

Thats fine as far as it goes but the real question to O'Bammy is, if this is indeed the case, and I do believe that it is, then what "specifically" are you going to do that WILL have the effect of lowering gas prices "long term"?

Here's a hint there Bammy...higher taxes ain't gonna get it done.

Do you think he knows anything about scanners at the checkout counter?

Remember, he's a Harvard grad and the Ivy Leaguers all have a problem with this part of the economy.

Hey Barry......

I drive between 150 and 300 miles a day in a full sized pick up.

But I don’t pay for my gas,my company does.

How much am I going to save with your holiday ???? If everyone else is getting a check in the mail, I deserve one too, don’t I ????

I agree...the amount of federal gas tax paid is inconsequential to most people over a 3/6 month period. However it is not inconsequential to the Federal Highway Funds and the infrastructure it funds. Whether his math is right or wrong he is on the right side of this issue (regretfully McCain is not).

Yes, and your Social Security taxes actually fund Social Security.

I hate to bust your math, but you are using “old” math. Obammer is obviously a student of the NEW MATH that they are teaching in schools today.

Not anywhere close...you don’t know how much I detest both Democratic candidates and what I believe they will do to this country. I just think we ought to be honest about the issue.

By the way, it’s kind of interesting how my screen lights up with a red “obama” all the time...

Don’t even get me started on that one...or on the health insurance issue...two proposals by the way that GWB had that in my opinion would have had a major positive impact on employees/employers and the economy.

Having said that it is interesting to note that the Federal Gas Tax from December 1990 to January 1996 did go explicitly to the general fund.
