Analysis: Could Clinton land the VP nomination?

Friends and close associates of both Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are now convinced that, assuming she loses the race for the presidential nomination, she is probably going to fight to be the vice presidential nominee on an Obama-for-president ticket.

Clinton "is trying to figure out how to land the plane without looking like surrender," a prominent figure in the Obama camp said Friday. This means, in all likelihood, bringing her campaign to a close in the next few weeks and trying to leverage her way onto an Obama ticket from a position of maximum strength, said several knowledgeable sources.

A person close to her, with whom her campaign staff has counseled at various points, said this week, "I think the following will happen: Obama will be in a position where the party declares him the nominee by the first week in June. She'll still be fighting with everybody -- the Rules Committee, the party leaders -- and arguing, 'I'm winning these key states; I've got almost half the delegates. I have a whole constituency he hasn't reached. I've got real differences on approach to how we win this election, and I'm going to press the hell out of this guy. ... Relief for the middle class, universal health care, etc.; I'm Ms. Blue Collar, and I'm going to press my fight, because he can't win without my being on the ticket.' "

Another major Democratic Party figure agreed: "It's not going to be a quiet exit. ... Obama has got a terrible situation. He marches to a different drummer. He won't want to take her on the ticket.

I don’t think Mrs. Obama will allow Hillary to take the #2 spot.

“Obama has got a terrible situation. He marches to a different drummer. He won't want to take her on the ticket.”

Actually, he doesn't want to pay those kind of life insurance premiums.

Traditionally, a presidential candidate picks a VP candidate who will help the ticket. Hillary has such high negatives. How will Hillary help gain support in the general election?

Granted, she may help keep some of the uneducated white vote that she talks about, maybe. But how will an Obama/Clinton ticket help attract moderate/independent/disaffected Republicans? Hillary is the most hated Democrat among Republicans.

And Obama wants to turn the page and move past the Clinton years. Having Hillary on the ticket contradicts what he wants to accomplish.

And, what states will Hillary as VP help carry? Will an Obama/Clinton ticket carry West Virginia and Kentucky, for example?

Obama won’t pick Hillary. And if he did I don’t know if she would accept. The only way I see here doing this is if he pays off a good portion of her campaign debt.

Exactly she has real high negatives. If he choses a woman to run with it won't be Hillary.

I can just see a cabinet meeting in a moment of chaos...and Hillary arguing her point to Obama. She can’t work as number two. Its hard enough to sit in the senate.

Being a nobody in the party, Obama will acquiesce to what the MSM/Democrat establishment wants. He was a mistake, due to Clinton's poor campaign. He'll get the 3 am phone call, and it will be his marching orders.

“try to convince Clinton to either stay in the Senate or accept another position in an Obama administration”

SCOTUS? She has a great paying job for life with no more campaigning. Bill has cover for his plans.. whatever that may be.

Great cartoon! :^)

I think that I'm going to credit Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" as the inspiration for the Wizard of Oz spoof.

Good point — Michelle Obama does not seem like someone who could bear to spend the next 4-8 years overshadowed by the Clintonistas. Even if Barack were to start to entertain the idea I cannot imagine that Michelle would put up with it for a moment.
