There was a post on FR a couple of weeks ago that talked about the damn and its ability to withstand a 6.x quake. Perhaps someone can find it. I looked but could not.

Here’s the last one I felt... I remember I was dreaming (it was about 1am)... and it woke me up fast... I remember going from dream scene and it flashed a bright white (my waking up point). I clung to my sheets (shaken side to side for about a minute or so)... I could hear my heartbeat... slow but heavy :/

BBC saying the same thing. It’s early and news takes awhile to get out even in open societies; but I suspect this will be a case where the western media, rightly critical of Burma for soft-pedaling news of the cyclone disaster, will enthusiastically support China’s efforts (Olympics are less than 3 months away) to do the same thing.

I am a Chinese and according to my parents who are now in Chengdu, the center of the earthquake is rather a romote region.
There are no serious injuries and death in Chengdu. Some buildings did collapse but few ones got injuried. The situation is more serious in the countryside, where some houses are still builed by clay and wood.
The center of the earthquakr is in Wenchuan, a small town whose population is about 110,000, including the people live in the countryside nearby. However, the situation is not clear because the electronic communication has been destroyed. Let’s hope for the best.

Probably compressional, roughly NE/SW. Odd that it seems so shallow....

You join us on a sad day for the people affected. And your post is exactly what makes this board so attractive.

Thanks for sharing what you KNOW about the situation. And, the voice of a Chinese will be very welcome in discussions related to America’s relations with your country.

Children killed in quake? Amazing! Who would have thought children might get killed in a natural disaster. Whoever wrote this headline is comatose.

The point is that middle school’s teaching building collapsed-—and probably because of the indifference of the quality of this building, since it seems that this is the only building collapsed in the nearby.

900 students 'buried' in China earthquake

Premier Wen Jiabao left Beijing and tried to reach the epicentre after the tremor rocked the region at 0628 GMT at a depth of 18 miles. The decision to send such a senior leader was the first hint that officials feared a high casualty toll in a region with a large Tibetan population that has seen anti-Chinese unrest in recent weeks.

900 Trapped After Quake, China State Media Reports

BEIJING — A powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region of western China on Monday, killing at least 107 people and trapping more than 900 students beneath a collapsed high school as tremors shook buildings for hundreds of miles, according to interviews and reports in China’s state media.

Early Monday evening, Xinhua also flashed an emergency report from Dujiangyan describing that nearly 900 students were feared trapped after a high school collapsed. Most of the telephones in the city were not functioning, and the Xinhua report could not be independently verified.

Efforts to reach people near the epicenter of the bigger quake in western China were hindered by the damaged telephone system. But receptionists at different hotels in Chengdu said the earthquake appeared not to have caused any major problems in the city. Xinhua showed photographs of minor flooding caused by damage to an underground water pipe, but, as yet, the city seemed largely undamaged.
