COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - More than 200 students and faculty members at Furman University have signed a statement protesting President Bush's visit to speak at the South Carolina school's commencement later this month.
Bush is scheduled to speak at Furman's graduation ceremonies May 31.
The 222 co-signers say in a statement on the school's Web site that they object to the president's visit for several reasons, including the war in Iraq. They also cite the administration's "obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits."
English professor Robin Visel says a lecture series about various Bush administration policies is planned before Bush comes to the Greenville school.
SC BDS ping!
I feel a lot better about spray painting Furman’s campus Citadel Blue in 1971 now!
Yes, damn them all - our longstanding ‘enemy within’.
p.s. Would someone on Campus ask them what it is about ‘free speech’ they fear and abhor? (. . .and why they do not choose to live in a Country where the entire body politic feels the same way?)
Not for everyone apparently...
Damn straight. I'm a professor and it makes me sick to hear faculty whining about Bush and still begging for federal handouts. If I hated the government that much, I wouldn't want money from it. Damn hypocritical liberals.
I’ve been on the campus lately(contracting), nuthin but cankles, hairy armpits and the oppressive stench of patchouli. .
I know at least one drug dealer on that list who is somehow still a student after 6 years (child of faculty receiving free tuition). Some can’t even really be called professors. Another is a semi-retired guy who refers people with “disabilities” to get adderall and another is a librarian. That list is a joke. I didn’t see a single Political Science professor on that list, even though it is about half conservative and half liberal. The people on the list are primarily fringe Dr. Fehler is an exceptional history profressor, however.
They shed the Baptist affiliation years ago.
It’s a very conservative school. I’m a 1984 graduate. 200 out of 4200 (or 4.7 %) doesn’t mean squat. How many of those folks were faculty or members of the left wing religion department?

Bush is banned but yet they would applaud and drool over Chavez or Ayers. Your tax dollars at work, teaching, more like brain washing our children with the liberal doctrine.
With the quality of American academia tanking is it too much to ask the eggheads to focus on traditional education instead of junk science and anti-capitalism? Meanwhile tuitions are going through the roof.
I predict that the alumni will be heard loud and clear in this case and the faculty will STFU. Money talks and talk walks. Might take a little time to clean up the place, but I’ll bet on the Alumni.
spill over from UNC-Chapel Hill????

And I'm sure that lecture series will be absolutely balanced, too.
South Carolina Ping
Add me to the list. / Remove me from the list.

LOL! I can hear Dixieland playing in my mind right now.
Are you a former smackhead from Alcatraz on the Ashley?
