Speaking of widows, if they die before their husbands they are shunned by the family and kicked to the curb basically. Read this interesting article from CNN on the cruel peculiarities of hindu culture...

If they die before their husbands, they are not widows, they're dead.

The only way to deal with this crap is to place everyone involved in a permanent and public state of shame. The village should have its roads destroyed, be denied running water and/or have its wells collapsed, have its crops burned and the people have their foreheads tattooed with the word “unclean”.

Au contraire, the way "deal with this crap" is to shine the light of modernity on it. Sort of a 21st century Marshall Plan: Build new, better roads; run 24/7 unlimited electricity; dig wells, set up a sewage treatment plan, make fresh clean water inexpensive and abundant; create jobs -- factories making desirable, easily manufactured things, i.e. bicycles, sewing machines, electric fans and small motors; set up the economy a la (pre-1990) Hong Kong -- simple to establish business, ridiculously low taxes; guarantee of property rights, etc. etc.

All these would utterly ruins the atmosphere these murders need to survive and thrive.

I believe it was from one or more of my Indian histories, Wolpert or possibly James on the Raj.

Note that when discussing things like suttee, they are talking about conditions in the 19th century.

I am sure there is now a range of modernity among Jats as there is among other Indians.

This is the sort of thing I understand was typical.

And oviously it remains so for a lot of people.

Ahem............your logic is utterly ridiculous.

Random violent crimes compared to a sick societal “norm”? When was the last time you saw some ‘wilding’ or rape or murder celebrated by an entire town?

Go back to school, learn something about logic and debate....let alone sociology.....then come talk to me here. Until then.......shut up.

Honor killings are not a societal norm in India despite what you think. You’re uneducated and a boor. Do yourself a favor and follow the same advice you gave me - STFU.

trying to wrap my head around this one-lets see: Nobody would drink water in Sunita's mother's house because of the dishonour of their daughter falling in love, but now villagers will drink water in her house because five men strangled her daughter....

Why bother? Shithead savages are beyond ratiocination, much like flesh-eating bacteria. Barbarian a-holes are a-holes, and never will make sense to the civilized mind.

Unfortunately, much of Asia has this problem, and would take dozens of trillions of dollars to modernize. Therefore, you have to use the tools at your disposal.
