U.S. soldier uses Quran for target practice. Military apologizes.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A soldier used the Quran -- Islam's holy book -- for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday.

Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond apologizes after a soldier admitted using the Quran for target practice. Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, apologized to leaders in Radhwaniya, in the western outskirts of Baghdad, for the staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader assigned to the headquarters of the 64th Armored Regiment.

He also read a letter of apology by the shooter. It was the first time the incident -- which tested the relationship between U.S.-backed Sunni militiamen and the military -- was made public since it was discovered May 11. "I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Hammond said to tribal leaders and others at the apology ceremony.

"In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers." Another military official kissed a Quran and presented is as "a humble gift" to the tribal leaders.

These people literally worship woodpulp.

Lot of good Mohammad got out of burning down all those wooden idols in Mecca.

That soldier needs a major ass kicking for that. The reality is that he put his fellow soldiers and Marines in harm’s way.

He could have used one for TP and kept his mouth shut.

I used to burn a koran every Sept. 11th and cut the cover to insert in my shoes and I'd walk around all day on them.

But then I decided I didn't like having evil that close to me, so I just burn them now.

I know, and you are right.

This appeasement behavior is not really part of the warfighter mentality I always envisioned in our Army.

I can see General Patton rolling over in his grave.

"the apology ceremony."

Did the taxpayer have to finance a "ceremony" for this?

Would have hated to be the S3 or S1 during the planning of that claptrap.

Please forgive me and my soldiers. Certainly there was something more worthless to shoot at than some book, yet would have brought more worthwhile results. It is unfortunate that we are allied with those who would find a book, or the words within, more valuable than the lives and destiny of those who profess to uphold and learn from such a book. When the book is more important than the message, beware. The end is near. If we may hasten that end and save you suffering, we are honored to do so.

In all fairness, if Iraq were here removing violent, extremist Christians from our neighborhoods then used the Bible as a target, you’d all be screaming for an explanation and apology as well.

Seriously, the inability for some of you to think outside your personal space is rather unsettling.

Granted, but that nasty book reads like "Mein Kampf."

The chapters about killing Jews and non-muslims are especially disgusting.

The bottom line is that there are many non-PC Soldiers in the ranks today, and we are seeing what happens to them.

They get into deep excrement the instant they demonstrate any behavior outside of the politically correct crap being shoved down our throats.

It's all in keeping with the "Islam is a Religion of Peace" LIE.

The Army is fast becoming the last place a non-PC American should find himself.

Can you imagine General Patton being forced to kiss "Mein Kampf" during his apology ceremony to the Nazis?

I don’t think what he did was too bright. I am wondering if he did it to get out of Iraq.

I don’t think this was a political incorrect incident, it was stupidity. He doesn’t realize how much damage this could have cause and the additional lives he put at risk because of it.

There would be people here on FR who would be upset if a Bible had been used for target practice.

Okay, but you are missing the point about the apology ceremony and the begging of forgiveness.

I still can't quite picture General Patton begging for forgiveness of the Nazis and giving "Mein Kampf" a big, fat smooch and kneeling.

If the US had followed the idea that he was associated with, that we should ally with the Germans against Stalin, damned right he would have had to kiss it.

A problem (but not NOT “the”) is that when anyone, anywhere does something like this, muslims the world over riot over what ONE MAN did. The US didn’t do this. ONE MAN did. Just like the story about the kran in the toilet. Considering we’re trying to help Iraq, and get Iraqis to help us, it is very unhelpful. Still, the worst part of it is our military being “forced” to apologize for it.

Should this have happened in the USA, the shooter would be in jail and the local mayor would have been forced to kiss the koran at the local mosque. So, what else is new?

You don't know that.

Mein Kampf and the Koran are loaded with terrible, racist statements about killing Jews. They are something out of a Louis Farrakhan speech.

I am inclined to believe our military leaders today are too politically correct.

What kind of American kisses the Koran and grovels for forgiveness? Then they booted the sniper out of theater after "finding him guilty?" Guilty of what?

It's just weakness on display if you ask me. And it sends a message to the troops about being feeble-minded fools lest they upset the PC gods that govern our military.
