Dunkin' Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad
Boston Globe ^ | 5/27/08 | staff

Does Dunkin’ Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. more stories like this

Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin’ Donuts boycott.

‘‘The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,’’ Malkin yowls in her syndicated column.

‘‘Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.’’

The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin’ Donuts decided it’d be easier just to yank the ad.

“The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men..”

It is akin to the “guttrah”, a red and white checkered headscarf worn by Saudi men.

These acts of diversity are beginning to be quite problematic. Frankly, I wouldn’t go near one of those cloths, the type Arafat used to wear, and it really makes me wonder why anyone would.

I don’t think Rachael Ray is trying to show support for terrorists, but by wearing this cloth, she shows an incensitivity that is glaring.

This cloth was Arafat’s signature appearal. I think it’s disgusting that she and Dunken Donuts were this clueless.

I don’t think it looks like a keffiyeh, but it *does* look as if it got caught in the agitator of a washing machine during the spin cycle.

It’s just an ugly scarf.

looks like the knee jerks won.... I feel sorry for the poor woman who chose the wrong day to wear a black and white scarf that clearly wasn’t a keffiyeh.

It’s a scarf, a pretty scarf, nothing more. How do they know those aren’t figures from Rachel’s culture on the scarf, such as Greece?

World full of ignorant, controlling, busy-bodies...paid by Muslims.
