FBI Warns: New al-Qaida WMD Threat
Newsmax ^ | May 27, 2008 | Staff

The FBI issued a bulletin to 18,000 law enforcement agencies this week warning that al-Qaida has made new threats to use weapons of mass destruction against U.S. targets.

ABC News reported late Tuesday that intelligence sources have confirmed that al-Qaida plans to release a new video on the web sometime tomorrow. U.S. intelligence believes the terror group will advise its "jihadists to use biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to attack the West."

An FBI spokesman confirmed the threat "calling for the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against civilians." The U.S. has no "intelligence of any specific plot or indication of a threat to the U.S.," the Bureau spokesman said. Still, the FBI has taken the precautionary step of alerting other agencies of the potential threat.

Such threats are not unusual for the Bureau. Earlier this year, Dr. Vahid Majidi, the bureau’s assistant director in charge of the WMD Directorate, told Newsmax that the FBI gets at least several dozen cases a year involving weapons of mass destruction.

The Bureau takes such threats seriously.

In a separate interview with Newsmax's Ronald Kessler last year, FBI Director Robert Mueller said Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group were actively seeking to obtain nuclear devices with the intent to explode them in American cities.

Mueller conjectured how al Qaida might acquire one or more nuclear devices. "One is to obtain a nuclear device that's already been constructed from one of the former Iron Curtain countries, and the other way is to put together the fissile material and the expertise and do an improvised nuclear device," Mueller said.

"And there's no doubt that al Qaida, if it had the capability, would go down either route to get a nuclear device."

So if they succeed, it’ll be Bush’s fault for mismanaging the War On Terror, and if they fail, it’ll be Bush’s fault for hyping the threat.

Yep. That's what the DNC calls a win-win situation.

Here is the link to the original ABC News article:

http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/FedCrimes/story?id=4941724

“Intelligence and law enforcement sources tell ABC News they are expecting al Qaeda supporters will post a new video on the Internet in the next 24 hours, calling for what one source said is “jihadists to use biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to attack the West.”

While there is no evidence of any direct threat, the FBI sent a bulletin to 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country, out of an abundance of caution. “

Odd how nobody points out the role that Obama foreign policy advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski played in creating Al Qaeda.

This is a tough story to figure out. Is this a jihadist propaganda video, a coded message to a sleeper cell, or a hoax?

Several theories at Link: http://www.nationalterroralert.com/updates/2008/05/27/nuclear-terrorism-new-al-qaeda-video-calls-for-nuclear-strike-or-chemical-weapon-attack-against-west/

"TERRORISM" May 2002 - So it appears that the "home of the brave" includes citizens who may be intimidated by the presence of a plastic knife! One may only be terrorized if he allows himself to be. "Terror" is a bad word and should be abandoned. Apparently, we are living in an age when word usage may be dictated by the timid, the cowardly and the dishonorable. Let us turn that around and set up proper English usage to suit people who are worthy of it. Just as you cannot be enslaved against your will, you cannot be terrorized against your will. We inherit a noble tradition. Let us now resolve to live up to it!

With a wide open border to the rest of the world, it’s only a question of when. Evidence of uranium smuggling has already been found on the border.

Our enemies learned from 9/11 that they need to hit us hard the first time with a new attack before we smarten up(it’s pretty much impossible to hijack planes today).

A single nuke would do very little to hurt the US and would force us to secure the border, but many nukes hitting simultaneously could cause complete chaos. The psychological impact of a nuke attack could be devastating enough.

Technology offers prosperity but also gives power to madmen.

The Borders would be a very thorny issue to handle for me if were I the executive ( i’tll never happen :-) )

I hear you, and we need to handle the illegal immigration issue somehow, but closing off the borders and making us look like East Europe in the cold war is not a good answer.

Looking back in time, maybe the intent of NAFTA was good (to make Mexico economically viable) but Mexico was still to corrupt for it to work.

It’s only with the cooperation of the media that the Dems have been able to get away with this.

Well, essentially that is what Dubya told all us soon after 9-11.

I genuinely hope a clown like ‘bama does not get into office. He makes Hilary look good in comparison.

I hope Mc Cain builds a really good platform and makes an outstanding VP pick, because I will pull my nose and vote for him in the end.

A confession, I once worked in the nuclear industry. I have been part of a plutonium cleanup at a laboratory, and I once did calculations for the impact of power plant hypothetical nuclear releases.

Outside of the "fear-factor" having to do with theoretical increases in the number of cancers, I think that a nuclear devise of two (if post cleanup is dealt with aggressively and not bogged down with EIS analysis)would do little long term economic data. Hosing down the area and flushing things into rivers or oceans and then putting a fresh coat of paint on things would do much to either get rid of or encapsulate any residual radiation.

Having talked to "bomb" people who talk in LD-50/30's and civilian power people who talk in the tiniest of dose rates was a very interesting eye-opener.

I don’t think it will be bio attack. Terrorists don’t innovate—there is a reason they have been using carbombing and suicide bombings since the early 80’s. It will most likely be one of two things: a dirty bomb or another simultaneous multi target strike here in the USA. Think of a half dozen SBs going off at malls or shopping centers simultaneously. Something that will shock and awe us. If they go to dirty bomb, it will be to create heavy fear and panic...in addition to immediate casualties.

Thanks for posting this piece. My fear is that the next terrorist campaign will involve conventional weapons (Hamas, Islamic Jihad) relaunching its rocket campaign against Israel. Use of WMD against the west is also a possibility, though much less likely.

I have a nuke-E degree so I have some understanding but have not yet worked in the nuke industry. I got it as a 2nd degree because I thought we would be heavy into nuclear power by now like Europe.

Of course 1-2 small devices would cause little damage beyond the intense fear factor.

But 10-20 or more devices could be crippling. Of course people scream it's not possible but if someone told me it was possible bring down the entire WTC complex on 9/10 into dust, I'd have laughed at them and said “they sealed off the underground after the last bomb so it's not happening and there's no way they could hit all the buildings”.

Security was laughable at some nuke sites I visited within the US for my studies, even post 9/11. The fact that former-USSR nations were holding nuclear fuel does not inspire confidence in the least bit.

I escaped from there and know the utter stupidity, greed and corruption of many of my people is infinite. It will put dangerous material into somebody's hands for the right price or the right target. There are still some die-hard Soviet crazies that would delight in nuking us without retaliation.

I agree.

I still would like to know who was responsible for the Anthrax attack on the Florida tabloid and the halls of power in WA DC. There never has been a credible explanation from my standpoint.

I would also like to know why they guy in Nevada had and was messing around with ricin or caster bean stuff. The arrest of this guy was kind of swept under the rug.

Security was laughable at some nuke sites I visited within the US for my studies, even post 9/11. The fact that former-USSR nations were holding nuclear fuel does not inspire confidence in the least bit.

Since 9/11 various enforcement agencies have been looking at connections much more than they use to. Any effort that would bring in 10 to 20 devices and plan for their near simultaneous detonation, would likely draw the attention of HLS, NSA, or law enforcement for one of its cells. That is a big difference between now and then.

Again, bomb designers talk in terms of lethal dose for 50% of the exposed population within 30 days. Those are huge amounts of radiation. In the civilian nuclear world the dose rates discussed are absolutely minuscule. This means that a dirty bomb is likely to harm a "few people" within 30 to 90 days and be mostly a clean-up problem. If authorities just hose if down and paint the area rather than wringing their hands over the ecological effects on the streams and fish, the clean-up "problem" of a dirty bomb is likely quite small except for the litigation about not following environmental laws.

As to current nuclear facility security, in February, when I inspected an operating nuclear plant, I saw elaborate security in incredible depth. One of the guys I was with didn't really understand security and asked why we had to go through some chain link mazes to get into the plant. I explained to him that they were killing fields where someone trying to get in would be machine-gunned to death by the guards. Sometimes, the security isn't obvious until you realize what it is. The facility I was at had security that I thought was a bit over the top, but recognized that it was designed by people who understood logistics and how to kill intruders.
