Poll Question: Should parents need teaching credentials to home-school their kids?

Article Quote: “If upheld, the California ruling will send shock waves nationwide,” says Richard Kahlenberg, the author of a number of books on education. He says the case “pits those who believe parental rights are paramount against those who place a premium on well-educated citizens.”

Richard Kahlenberg loves the teacher's unions, and shares his views freely.

"No single organization is as responsible for the defense of public education in the United States as teacher unions. Other groups oppose private school vouchers, but only teacher unions have the political muscle and organizational and strategic capacity to beat back privatization plans. Likewise, the death of teacher unions would snuff out one of the few bright spots in an otherwise desperate landscape for the American labor movement. "

"It's understandable that right-wingers would oppose teacher unions. But for those who see public education as an indispensable democratic institution, crucial to promoting economic mobility and social cohesion, a world without teacher unions would be grim. Likewise, for those who recognize unions not merely as economic actors but as institutions designed to democratize capitalism, provide a voice to workers in their occupation, and counter the strong influence of corporations in politics, the survival of teacher unions is critical.

As Shanker himself once observed, "conservatives want to kill us because essentially we form the strongest liberal base in the country... But the liberals don't realize who their friends are."

Too bad Kahlenberg's entire premise is factually incorrect. Home schooled students, not public school students, are more likely to be "well-educated citizens". Parade Magazine couldn't have chosen a more biased quote for their article.

The libs have got to make homeschooling illegal, because otherwise, no one will send their kids to public schools.

FReeped.

Wow—95% say no, and it’s about 45,000 no votes so you know it’s not just FReepers.

That’s a good sign, don’t you think? Parade certainly isn’t anyone’s idea of a right-wing megaphone.

Actually, it is the failing government school system which should be illegal, but then there might be pressure to reduce taxes ,,, so won’t be happening.

Are you kidding me? some public schools should be illegal.

Ask the folks in Michigan who are supporting Muslim education for their children.

When will we stand for our rights? My children deserve the same rights and privileges as other religions to learn about our world view! Why is it we cant have Fellowship of Christian Athletes, but we must have feet washing basins for other religions?

“otherwise, no one will send their kids to public schools”

We can only hope so. As it is now we’ve got a couple of generations that have gone through the indoctrination centers that our public schools have become.

Just a matter of time. It doesn’t matter what the people think.

The lack of a "teaching certificate" makes this man unqualified to teach high school science...

Home schooled students, not public school students, are more likely to be "well-educated citizens".

There's a definition switch operating here. "Well-educated" in the Kahlenberg sense is equivalent to "goodthinkful" in the Orwell sense.

Homeschoolers unbellyfeel Ingsoc (or Amsoc, either.)

The judge, citing a state education law, said that “parents do not have a constitutional right to home-school their children.”

Unbelievable. Philosopher kings.

Wow -- 95% to 5%.

Folks at Parade no doubt thinking they may have phrased the question in the wrong way.

The poll isn't "Should home schooling be illegal".

It's "Should parents need teaching credentials to home-school their kids?"

Big difference IMHO.

I bet they never report the results of that poll in any published magazine.

It’s going around on all the homeschool lists. I think Parade was hoping for a different outcome!

I attended two high school graduation ceremonies last weekend. About 1400 kids total were handed a diploma.

I can tell you from personal experience that I didn't see 1400 experts on the requirments of what it takes to be a standout or standup citizen.

10% in ANY poll is the "I met Elvis while I was being abducted to a UFO" level of response. So 5% in favor of outlawing homeschooling is 1/2 that level. Those people are twice as aberrant as the Elvis/Space Alien crowd.

In a great majority of the cases, requiring teaching credentials of a parent would be making homeschooling illegal.

My husband and I are engineers. He’s an ME, I’m a software engineer. We were both home educated by mothers with very different educational backgrounds. My mom had a high school diploma; my mother in law has a masters’ degree. But both produced children capable of becoming whatever they wanted - engineers, fighter jet pilots, veterinarians, historians, journalists (that is literally the list of jobs my and my husband’s siblings have taken.)

Requiring a teaching degree or training would mean that my mother wasn’t qualified, that I’m not qualified, that a Ph.D in three subjects with an IQ of 180 isn’t qualified to teach addition to six year olds.

Lack of a teaching credential?

Bill Gates couldn’t do a guest Programming seminar?
Warren Buffet is unqualified to do a Business 101 course?

Get real. Credentials aren’t on paper. They’re in real life.
