EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Written by Melanie Morgan
Thursday, 05 June 2008

The rest of the country is now being notified in press releases and emails what I have been hinting at on this website for the past few days.

The impossibly funny, smart, warm and intellectually driven Ann Coulter is going to join us in the live broadcast "From the Frontlines" on June 26th at HotAir.com presented by Move America Forward, UStream.tv and Kithbridge, Inc.

Liberals HATE Ann Coulter. Conservatives LOVE Ann Coulter. Most folks, though, don't know a side of her that I do. Ann is unstintingly generous in giving support to others who work to share our conservative ideals, and especially our American military.

Ann's late father nicknamed her "Hart" ...and that perfectly describes Ann. She has a huge HEART for our troops.

and Colonel North met with U.S. troops who were on their way to Iraq.
Melanie personally delivered thousands of the 226,000 Christmas
and holiday cards MAF collected for our troops.

Colonel Oliver North and his co-author Chuck Holton are now confirmed VIP guests appearing on "From The Frontlines."

Who better to tell the narrative of a winning war and the heroes who fight it?

I met Chuck Holton and Col. North when they bought me dinner a few months ago in Kuwait. And all I can offer them is a few stinkin' bagels when they join the broadcast. Via airmail.

....well, maybe more than that. I can give these two gentlemen my unflinching admiration, for a start.

Ollie North is a true American patriot.

Chuck is a Christian adreneline junkie, who travels all around the world reporting on the hot-spots, protected by the angels.  Right now he's in Haiti.

Read the new book by North and Holton, called "American Heroes." Pick it up for Father's day, or simply because it is a fantastic read.

And don't forget Ann's book, which is also a welcome gift!

The grand finale for the push will take place on June 26th when a Jerry Lewis style 8-hour Internet Telethon ("From the Frontlines") will take place.  This cutting edge production “From The Frontlines” will be broadcast live online by UStream.tv and hosted by Melanie Morgan & Michelle Malkin.  Live and taped reports will be broadcast from our troops serving in Iraq & Afghanistan during the historic 8-hour event.

All I have to say about Oliver North is...

Article 1, Section 7, line 1 of the U.S. Constitution.

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives (i.e. not with an Executive branch officer who wishes to raise revenue by selling arms to Iran to fund an insurgent army in South America).

That might be the most obtuse comment I've ever seen posted on FR.

And you feel it is OK for Oliver North to sell arms to Iran to raise revenue to fund the Contras?

Constitutionally it doesn’t matter if we sold the Iranians their own excrement at premium prices; raising revenue is something that the Executive branch doesn’t have a mandate for under the Constitution.

Neither does congress conduct foreign policy. They also don’t conduct show trials and figuratively speaking pass a bill of attainder against an American citizen.

I hope you last more than 3 minutes so we can pound you.

The CIA is a part of the executive branch.

But I believe the Iran-Contra chicanery was run out of the National Security Council.

That's not the statement to which I was responding. My observation was addressed to:

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives (i.e. not with an Executive branch officer who wishes to raise revenue by selling arms to Iran to fund an insurgent army in South America).

Having a political disagreement with the Reagan Administration is one thing. Basing your disagreement on a specious Constitutional interpretation is something else altogether.

By your interpretation, the Montgomery, AL office of the Wage & Hour division of the Department of Labor couldn't sell their used office furniture without Congressional approval.

Please, if you've got an argument against what Oliver North did, base it on something more substantial than that.

Separately, yes, I happen to agree with what Oliver North did. And so did the Constitution, inasmuch as Congress had interfered with the Executive branch's sole responsibility to conduct foreign affairs by passing the Boland Amendment -- legislation which was subsequently determined to be...unconstitutional.

Congress repealed the Boland amendment (a bill passed by Congress and signed by Ronald Reagan), it was never ruled Unconstitutional.

Congress has the ‘power of the purse’; if the executive branch can raise money on its own then we really do have an Imperial Presidency.

If the Reagan administration had the power to sell arms to Iran to fund an anti-Communist insurgency then an Obama administration would have the power to sell arms to Iran to fund a pro-Communist insurgency group.

What do we tell the Office Manager of the Wage & Hours division in Montgomery, AL, then?

To not sell arms to the Iranians to fund an insurgency.

Where do you read in the Constitution that the Executive Branch “sole responsibility to conduct foreign affairs”?

Here is what I can find in the Constitution concerning conducting foreign affairs.

Article 1, from Section 8
(Congress shall have the power...)
To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

To declare War

To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;

To provide and maintain a Navy;

To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions

From Article 2, Section 2.

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States

He (the President) shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors

Amendment 11.

The Judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or by Citizens or Subjects of any Foreign State.

To not sell arms to the Iranians to fund an insurgency.

So, your objection to North's action is not really based on the constitutionality of the matter, but rather a disagreement with the objective.

In fact, you object to having helped the Contras in Nicaragua and would rather that Ortega and his crowd had prevailed.

OK. I understand where you're coming from now.

Exactly wrong. It is entirely about the Constitutionality of the matter. I support Reagan and oppose Noreiga, but the means North used to fund the Contras by selling arms to the Iranians was Unconstitutional.

As I said if North could sell arms to the Iranians to fund an anti-Communist insurgency, then an Obama administration could sell arms to the Iranians to fund a Communist insurgency.

And you are stuck on “sole responsibility” of the Executive to conduct foreign policy; which is ludicrous.
