A Campaign We Can Believe In?
New York Times ^ | 6/9/08 | William Kristol

Hillary Clinton’s concession speech Saturday was the story of the weekend. But the dueling speeches by John McCain and Barack Obama on Tuesday night, after the last primaries, are what voters — and campaign operatives — should be revisiting.

McCain chose to speak early in the evening, before the polls closed in South Dakota and Montana, thereby getting the jump on Obama. He read a disjointed set of remarks at a badly staged rally at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, La. Here’s part of an e-mail message I received as McCain spoke, from a Republican who admires him: “They could have done so well tonight, shown a tone of confidence. Instead it looks like a bad Congressional race: dumb green puke background, small crowd ... Makes me want to cry.”

Soon after Republicans finished shedding tears of frustration, Democrats were weeping tears of joy. Obama spoke about an hour later in a packed sports arena in St. Paul, Minn. His speech was well written and well delivered. He closed with quite a peroration, promising among other things that “generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs for the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

It was lofty oratory, exciting and even moving. Only later, in the light of day, might one pause to wonder: Would Obama’s election really mark the moment when Americans began to care for the sick?

Not real sure why everyone thinks Obama gave such a great speech.

Never heard a more vacuous, pompous, juvenile speech in my life. Me me me me me, it all about ME! Most college commencements have better speakers then Obama.

Take back the Energy issue, John.

Americans are waiting for POSITIVE ENERGY LEADERSHIP.

We can let Americans drill for American oil. YES WE CAN.

McCain is succumbing from years of mourning ever since his ordeal in Vietnam. He reminds me of the crazed Stewart of the land in the Lord of the Ring, who attempts to burn his own son alive. Everyone must grieve with him type cult.

As for Obama, his speeches are of greater grievances but in a fake positive tone of final relief. If elected, he’ll be comparable to the false suicide prophets who lead people to drawn in the sea.

McCain is like Bush or worse on energy (remember him? The propane truck driver). While Rome burn, they talk about little air wheels for electricity. Green is completely irrelevant, as we need hard nukes, coal and to dig oil to stem the current spiral and economic catastrophe due to years of energy regulations and cowardly CYA to a confederacy of lawyers and greenies.

Watched Fox News Sunday ,Chris Wallace was reading his questions right from the democrats talking points. The issue this election is going to be the economy so lets explore that.Kept interrupting Pawlenty when he was making his points and let Cain ramble on .
Why do these week Kneed Republicans just sit there and take this crap, Why is the Economy the issue and not the fact that the Democrats have been wrong on every step in Iraq?
There will never be an election in Iraq to set up an Interim Govt,to much Violence ,WRONG ,the people will not get a Constitution in Iraq,Wrong ,They will not vote for a permanent Govt. WRONG ,The war is lost ,WRONG ,the surge wont work, wrong we can not win Militarily in Iraq WRONG,The surge wont work I dont care if we send an additional 15000,20,000 troops, WRONG.I think Obambi is right his Judgement is what people should look at but I guess the democrats SAY this is not an issue so we wont talk about that

I hope you do realize you have utterly no clue what you are talking about.

Are you aware that 91% of the votes for increased US Domestic Production came from Republicans

Are you aware that Democrat lead the repeated filibusters to block any increase Domestic Energy production?

That Democrats voted 87% of the time to block any attempt to reform US Energy policy?

But I know, don't bother the facts, the Democrats have their talking points and cannot be bothered with anything so pedestrian as the truth.

How true! Let’s build nuclear power plants, too. We have the need and the know how, technology has advanced so far and we could heat our homes without the ME oil. The Italians are going to build seven plants, why not us?

America still has the greatest technological prowess in the world. And we're refusing to use it.

Here's a suggestion for a McCain slogan, with hats off to some FR poster who first posted the term (can't remember who):

Let's stop America's slide into Paleolithic Squalor.

You’re right, MNJohnnie. There are plenty of weak-kneed Republicans, it’s true. But if you examine the RECORD, it’s the Democrats who have stifled energy production, not the Republicans.

>>Let's stop America's slide into Paleolithic Squalor.<<

Good one! I always think of it (particularly the Barry phenom) as being dragged down into the Third World, where airlines and hotels don't work, and matches are sold individually. From the Land of Plenty to the Land of Peons...

I have never liked Bill Krystol, although I’m surprised by this article inasmuchas he was a McCain guy and as an editor at the weakly standard is a driving force for the beltway GOP towards the mushy middle.

I think the Republican meme should be “Considering his lack of experience, it’s sending a boy to do a man’s job”

No, it’s not racist, it’s accurate.

Again, I don’t remember who here posted the words “Paleolithic Squalor”.

I really think it’s great.

I use that phrase once in a while in conversation with dimwit liberals and it never fails to get them where they live.
