“The order is aimed at cracking down on hiring of illegal immigrants. But people who overstayed visas or came to the country legally but do not have permission to work, such as some students or those awaiting work permits, also could be snagged with the system.”
In other words it might work and properly catch those it should.

Exactly! Kind of late. Of course McCain will apologize for this Executive Order as soon as he can find a camera and a mike!

George: "Because I campaigned on comprehensive immigration reform."
Just sayin'. No need for hysterics.

"It is the policy of the executive branch to enforce fully the immigration laws of the United States, including the detection and removal of illegal aliens and the imposition of legal sanctions against employers that hire illegal aliens," in the executive order says. Excellent!
But Freepers say.... "Whahahaaaaaaaa not fast enough, you didn't jump when we said jump... doesn't matter now.... too late... make it go away... I don't want it now..."
Just sayin'

The “electronic system” had better be right.
And the employer can only input the information that the immigrant gives him. The employer is not a police force.
I fear that the burden and cost will come down on the employer, not on the government where it belongs.

Policy. Constitutional duty. Oath of office.
Whatever.....

But, not expected from someone who's willfully ignorant of the actions Bush has taken during the last 7 years to encourage and reward illegal aliens crossing our borders.
And no, I won't detail for you what Bush has done. If you want to know, you can do your own research.
And if you have to do research to find out what Bush has done, then this proves you haven't been paying attention.

Bush had always been for comprehensive immigration reform. That you missed that is your fault for not paying attention. The fact that Bush is now doing what we, and YOU, want and YOU are crying is just pitiful...

There’s a lot of selective amnesia going around these days. There was a bunch of it on one of the ANWR threads today.

The order is aimed at cracking down on hiring of illegal immigrants. No, the order is aimed at trying to enthuse Republican voters before the elections, nothing more, nothing less.
It's just like the Oct 2006 bill to build the fence that was promptly ignored.

Unless you tell me otherwise, my understanding is that the funding for the Secure Fence Act was gutted by Congress. You need to focus.

They're more like guidelines than actual rules.

I find that stunning. Are you saying an employer has no social/LEGAL responsibility to hire legal, non criminal employees instead of those the rest of us are forced to subsidize on their behalf? Even slave owners had to be responsible for their slaves.

Oh, yes, that old worn out tirade. You know, we assumed (wrongly!) that Bush or anyone one else with a brain would do something about the border after 9/11. Because you didn’t is YOUR problem. And I didn’t vote for him the first time because he was a squishy moderate.
