CORONA, Calif. (AP) — Former Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins, convicted in the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate, could soon be released from prison because she is near death, authorities said.
Atkins, 59, is terminally ill and being considered for so-called "compassionate release," state corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said. She gave no details of Atkins' illness, but said a doctor had determined she had less than six months to live.
The corrections department was reviewing the request, which if approved would then be passed to the state Board of Parole which has the power to release Atkins under state law so they can die with loved ones, at their expense.
Such releases are relatively rare — only 10 of the 60 requests made last year were granted, Thornton said. The prisoners must have family members willing and able to care for them.
Atkins, now a gray-haired, matronly looking woman, was one of cult leader Manson's ersatz hippie "family" of young killers who burst into a Beverly Hills home 39 years ago and killed Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, along with four others. The following night they stabbed to death a wealthy couple in their Los Angeles home.
Atkins has been denied parole 11 times, most recently in 2005.
She was housed in the California Institution for Women in Corona for 37 years, but has been in a nearby hospital since March.
Where was the compassion for Sharon Tate and her unborn child? Where was the compassion when that couple were murdered? Compassion my foot.
I as a Christian and a human being feel compassion for this murderer but not enough to release her from prison. She will be taken care of inside the prison as well as someone on the outside is taken care of. She’s lucky she has people that have compassion when considering her release.
I think she should be given the same treatment as any patient receives but it should be given behind bars. At least if she has family they can come and physicall speak to her, pray for her and hug her. All Sharon Tate’s family can do is to come visit the gravsite of her and her unborn baby.

No. Manson and his followers should’ve fried like bacon almost 40 years ago for what they did to Mrs. Polanski & the baby. Thank the liberal activist U.S. Supremes for that decision to forbid the death penalty, always on a roll in doing the wrong thing.
She’s lucky she isn’t 6 feet under already.....let her rot where she is. Can you imagine how family members of the murdered ones feel about THIS?????

The “lawyer” that was funneling information and msgs out of prison for a terrorist was asked to be a guest lecturer at a Univ. in NY. Tom Delay was refused the position because he is too controversial.

And indeed that is what Susan should be told now.
I can think of a way to give her a “compassionate release” which would be equivalent to the way she treated Sharon Tate and her unborn child.
Looks like I may be the only one to stand against the tide, but so be it.
37 years in jail. Clear track record of acceptance of her personal guilt and responsibility. Clear break with her past (unlike others in the Manson family). A faith backed up by good works over the long term. In a prison hospital since March with terminal brain cancer.
I would be OK with compasionate release at this point.
If she's being considered for parole, then Sirhan Sirhan should be out.
Atkins brutally murdered Sharon Tate and HER BABY with a butcher knife. All Sirhan did was allegedly shoot one person, a politician. There's no solid proof that Sirhan even fired the fatal shot (his gun was a .22 Iver-Johnson revolver but many .38 cal rounds were found).

So Atkins has only 6-months left to live. How many do Sharon Tate and her baby have? Let her die in prison.
That really does infuriate me. Murder is as unforgiveable as you can get because you cannot bring the person back. Responsibility falls on the murderer and Atkins should spend the rest of her days behind bars(she’s lucky for that). Her murders were atrocious and showed no mercy. She needs to face the consequences. I’m sick of liberals putting this concern for the murderers always first.

Yes, and that just happened to be the merciless Susan Atkins who stabbed and stabbed away after telling Sharon that. She always bragged about what a rush she got from it.
