UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. company, announced that the New York Power Authority (NYPA) selected the company to supply 12 fuel cells totaling 4.8 megawatts of power for the Freedom Tower and three other new towers under construction at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan.
Delivery of the PureCell (R) Model 400 fuel cell systems will begin in January of 2009. The systems will together constitute one of the largest fuel cell installations in the world.
The Freedom Tower will be owned by the Port Authority of New York, and Towers 2, 3 and 4 will be owned and managed by World Trade Center Properties, LLC, an affiliate of Silverstein Properties, Inc.
The PureCell Model 400 power plant is one of the cleanest, quietest and most energy-efficient on-site power generating technologies available; no fossil fuel is burned to produce 400 kilowatts of power. The fuel cell's ultra low emissions meet the strictest air emissions requirements in the United States.

I'm not at liberty get into many details but on-site delivery (little line loss) and heated water can power micro turbines for additional heating/cooling.
If hey would use the electricity from those fuel cells to make the hydrogen they consume and have enough juice left to light the buildings and power "micro-turbines", I'd give this dumb stunt a second look.
I thought it may be informative.
My insider perspective of the recent developments on fuel cell energy (That which I can disclose)
Cheers! Yankee.
Actually it's pretty cool stuff, you need to read up on it to appreciate the efficiency.
Up until a year or so ago I was clueless about the process.
My dad used to work for UTC (Pratt-Whitney), so I’m glad they got the contract. UTC fuel cells ae made in CT.
Yup, in South Windsor :-)
Hope they’ll increase employment for them.
It is, more showed up yesterday.
They are.
Hiring a little at a time so they can give them training before bringing in the next group.
