” I will comment on your attempt to throw the typical leftist argument that “conservatives are heartless and mean-spirited and don’t understand grief the way we liberals do.”

Please show me where I said conservatives are heartless and mean. In addition, it’s bad form to put quotes around something I didn’t actually say. People reading your post and not mine would most likely assume I used those exact words. I did not.

SOME Freepers most certainly are mean-spirited, as are quite a few DUers. I should have been more clear in this most recent comment that it was NOT a about conservatives but rather about ANY blockhead who thinks somebody facing what this woman is facing should react in any predetermined way. More than likely, this woman had no idea what she said to the reporter.

“Although the boy was conscious and alert and making progress in children’s rehabilitation center, these parents “chose” to “let him die” by refusing permission for him to be treated with antibiotics when he got an infection from his trach tube.”

Even IF this story is true (see, I can play that game, too — as you said, anybody can post anything anonymously, and this story sounds highly suspect to me), exactly what does it have to do with the situation we were discussing? Nobody here has even the slightest idea whether this woman is liberal or conservative or something else, but there seems to be little question that she did NOT choose to have her son die.

I won’t even dignify your other comments.

Now that I think even more about it, exactly how are this woman’s comments “liberal?” She said she’s “worked” with victims, which says to me she’s probably been a victim advocate of some kind. Victim advocates usually work with the prosecution. She knows and understands the side of the victim, which is a heck of lot better than sympathizing with the perp.

Based on that knowledge, she always assumed she’s be furious if something bad happened to somebody she loved. And yet, at this point, she’s too numb and grief-stricken to be angry or to care what happens to the perps. I can almost guarantee you she WILL care later on, but even then, as she said, it won’t bring her son back.

Why is that liberal?

Because from how I read it, “I don’t care what happens to the people who did this..it won’t bring my son back” IS an attitude that allows crime like this to flourish.

If you want to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she is just numb with grief, fine. I hope you’re right.

In the City of Brothers Killing Eachother, occasionally a whitey gets hit. Really sad to hear this, but this is par for the course in Detroit on the Delaware these days.

This is Philly. Its safe to assume that the robber was black. Occassionally white junkies in places like Kensington and the lower Northeast kill eachother. Hispanics in Philly rarely kill for robbery (especially in South Philly). While there is a possibility that the perp was white, hispanic, or Vietnamese (lots of them in South Philly), I’d put money on it being a young black man from a single parent home.

Philly is the only city I can think of that would be improved by immigrants and hipsters. New York has effectively been remade by both an influx of affluent transplants, and immigrants from Asia/Latin America/Eastern Europe, so the “black/white” dichotomy of places like Philly and Baltimore seem quaint to most New Yorkers.

I don’t consider Girard Estates and Bridesburg to be “nice” neighborhoods. Lots of junkies and meth heads there, with many of the “normal” people missing teeth and having IQs below room temperature. Basically, much of Northeast Philly is like an urban version of “Deliverance.”

That comment really did make me laugh out loud. Also, do you think there’s some connection between the meth and the missing teeth?

“President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers Expresses Condolences to the Family of Philadelphia Teaching Fellow Beau Zabel”

President Jerry T. Jordan released the following statement today on the murder of a Philadelphia Teaching Fellow:

“Zabel’s untimely death is yet another wakeup call to the citys leaders to do everything within their power to improve safety on our streets and in our schools.

On behalf of the PFTs 16,000 teachers and school support employees with whom Zabel would have worked this fall, the PFT sends condolences to his family, whose grief is unimaginable.”

Are you two talking about the Girard Estate neighbhorhood in South Philly or is there one in NE Philly, too? I’m not as familiar with NE Philly.

Your description of Philly is totally, completely off the mark. There are a great number of ethnicities, cuisines, and ethnic festivals and a lot of intermingling, while at the same time there is a patchwork of traditionally ethnic neighborhoods of dozens and dozens of nationalities and customs. Baltimore, too, has many types of people. The "black/white" thing has been over since the late 60s in both Philly and Baltimore. I've lived in both areas for long periods of time, and DC as well.

Some “nice” neighborhoods, the thugs don’t go near lest their body is never found. Girard Estates and Bridesburg, for example.

LOL; nice one! Surely you want to include the neighborhood where this happened in this list, don't you? Bella Vista is still home to that 1% of Italian-Americans who are into la cosa nostra.

Yes, the Bella Vista and Italian Market areas are good places for thugs to keep away from as well, but I didn’t think Bella Vista went below Washington Ave.
