US mom pleads not guilty in MySpace suicide case
Yahoo News ^ | June 16, 2008

A 49-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to charges arising from her role in a MySpace hoax that ended with a 13-year-old girl committing suicide after being spurned by a fictitious boy. Lori Drew, 49, of Missouri, denied charges of conspiracy to inflict emotional distress and accessing MySpace computers without authorization. She will fact trial on July 29.

Prosecutors say Drew set up a fake account on the social networking site and posed, with others, as a 16-year-old boy "Josh Evans" to target a classmate of her teenage daughter, Megan Meier.

Meier hanged herself in October 2006, shortly after receiving a message from "Josh" saying amongst other things that he had no interest in a romantic relationship with her and would be better off without her.

No, that's not what was said. IIRC, the exact words to Megan were: THE WORLD would be better off without her (Megan). That's what all the news reports quoted at the time. Big difference. Yahoo News, as usual, screws it up and mangles the truth.

I decided to verify my total recall.

From the NY Times article, of Nov, 2007:

“The next day, in his final message, said Megan’s father, Ron Meier, Josh wrote, “The world would be a better place without you.”

Sobbing, Megan ran into her bedroom closet. Her mother found her there, hanging from a belt. She was 13.”

What is the mentality of a 49 year old woman that gets her “jollys” messing with kids online?

I couldnt talk to a 16 year old for 2 minutes without being bored out of my mind.

There’s more wrong with the news article than just spell check, trust me.

One word can change everything.

This woman isnt guilty of a damn thing except using the internet. Alot of prosecutors seem to have gone nuts lately. They have become power hungry, oportunistic, fame seeking, far-reaching bullies, trying to railroad people into the slammer for thier careerist goals.

I think she is guilty of something. Maybe not homocide but there is something seriously wrong with a woman that age trying to harass kids on the net.

I agree.

I don't wholly blame the mother of the other girl in this case though. I believe the parents of the young girl who died were remiss in their duties as parents in that they did not monitor their child's activities on the internet. Combine that with the fact the child had a history of some sort of mental or emotional problems; depression I think it was, and it's easy to see the parents should have paid closer attention to what was going on with their daughter.

The mother who portrayed herself as a teen boy is pretty sick herself and needs some serious help herself.

How can I take your post seriously? A list of the words in your post misspelled (not including punctuation mistakes):

opportunistic (there are supposed to be 2 p’s as opposed to one), “their” is the correct spelling, as opposed to “thier”. A lot as opposed to alot...

Here’s a tip: If you are going to use the internet, at least display some measure of competency. Unless, of course, this was a joke, in which case, I stand corrected.:)

Having "something seriously wrong " with you is not a crime. This is what I mean about prosecutors. They are grasping at straws, because it makes them look ""tough" in an arms crossed on the cover of a book or in your publicity shot sort of way. Meanwhile, they twist the law in the most bizzare ways to harass and railroad people who have not commited any actual crime.

It's very hard to believe you have or have had a teenage daughter in the internet age.

I’m sorry, but what are you talking about? Nowhere in the article or the post you refer to is the word “conspiracy” mentioned.
