Justice Antonin Scalia: Al Gore to blame for 2000 US election mess
By Toby Harnden in Washington

The 2000 presidential election debacle was the fault of Al Gore, who should have followed Richard Nixon's 1960 example and conceded without legal action, according to the Supreme Court's leading conservative judge.
The 2000 election remains a source of discontent for Democrats
"Richard Nixon, when he lost to [John F.] Kennedy thought that the election had been stolen in Chicago, which was very likely true with the system at the time," Justice Antonin Scalia told The Telegraph.
"But he did not even think about bringing a court challenge. That was his prerogative. So you know if you don't like it, don't blame it on me.
"I didn't bring it into the courts. Mr Gore brought it into the courts.
"So if you don't like the courts getting involved talk to Mr Gore."
Justice Scalia insisted that his controversial decision, along with four other justices, to stop votes being recounted in Florida because the method was unconstitutional and it was too late to consider other options was "absolutely right".
He was speaking during an interview about his book Making the Case: The Art of Persuading Judges.
A strict "textualist", he rejects the notion of a "living constitution", arguing instead that the original intentions of its framers should be closely adhered to.
Once a voice in the wilderness, Justice Scalia now often finds himself in a narrow majority on the Supreme Court, such as in a landmark gun control case in which he wrote for the 5-4 majority that the framers of the constitution believed in individual gun rights.

Amen! Justice Scalia. I've been saying this for years.
The legal action by Gore in 2000 is what has made me angry with and suspicious of the Democrat Party----they put personal power over the good of great nation. And, we will never be the same.
This is the overriding reason why I pray the Democrats meet the dustbin of history.
When the Democrats decided to defend Bill Clinton no matter what he did, they created a chasm that hasn't been repaired to this day.
There had always been a rift in our political fabric. The Democrats expanded that rift to a Grand Canyon size chasm.
The one thing that Richard Nixon never gets credit for, is resigning when he did. If he would have been 1/10th the bastard Bill Clinton was, he would have hired a team long before that and ripped this nation right down the middle, just like the Clintons did.
But then Nixon was a piker compared the the prick Clinton.
Indeed!!! You are correct and it was them that wanted to select not elect.
And Bush won on every recount.
Justice Scalia is *very* good at that, as well as verbally spanking low-grade doofi (such as Justice Stevens & Al Gore...)
the infowarrior
That was such an effective slogan. The signs were great. I saw them everywhere.
Sorry, I couldn't stop myself :-)
Well, more power to him. It’s appreciated from here.
I should look up more of his comments. These ones were sure in tune with my own thoughts.
Algore reminds me of Frank Burns.
God bless Justice Scalia!
Al wouldn't allow himself to be associated with a drink whose name might be associated by some with the evil automobile. Remember in the minds of liberals, perception is always more important than reality.
Didn't he already concede on TV right at first, then he took it back?
Seems like I remember reading that Gore and Boise were getting into the car - after he had already gave it up and Boise said to Gore over the top of the car (something like) - "We can fight this - you don't have to give up, yet."
Maybe I'm dreaming.
for later
There is one difference between the two elections. Nixon was cheated out of victory. Daley stole Illinois and LBJ stole Texas.
Algore reminds me of Frank Burns.
Ferret Face
I don't remember that. I remember the afternoon press conference that was cancelled in lieu of the court's actions.
Actually, he could be the new "Not this S#!+ again!" poster boy.
You are absolutely right! It justs burns me when I hear the media, even Bill O’Rielly, act like Bush is responsible for the divide in America. Algore is totally responsible.
“But he didnt and we have seen nothing but extreme divide ever since. The bastard is indeed to blame.”
I’d place the blame for starting hatred and division way back - let’s say Woodrow Wilson (DEMOCRAT - RACIST). To start with, he resegregated the federal government and gave us the corruption and robbery of the income tax, union riots, direct election of senators, and the female vote.
But that’s just my opinion.
