Justice Antonin Scalia: Al Gore To Blame For 2000 US Election Mess

Justice Antonin Scalia: Al Gore to blame for 2000 US election mess

By Toby Harnden in Washington
Last Updated: 6:35PM BST 26/06/2008

The 2000 presidential election debacle was the fault of Al Gore, who should have followed Richard Nixon's 1960 example and conceded without legal action, according to the Supreme Court's leading conservative judge.

The 2000 election remains a source of discontent for Democrats

"Richard Nixon, when he lost to [John F.] Kennedy thought that the election had been stolen in Chicago, which was very likely true with the system at the time," Justice Antonin Scalia told The Telegraph.

"But he did not even think about bringing a court challenge. That was his prerogative. So you know if you don't like it, don't blame it on me.

"I didn't bring it into the courts. Mr Gore brought it into the courts.

"So if you don't like the courts getting involved talk to Mr Gore."

Justice Scalia insisted that his controversial decision, along with four other justices, to stop votes being recounted in Florida because the method was unconstitutional and it was too late to consider other options was "absolutely right".

He was speaking during an interview about his book Making the Case: The Art of Persuading Judges.

A strict "textualist", he rejects the notion of a "living constitution", arguing instead that the original intentions of its framers should be closely adhered to.

Once a voice in the wilderness, Justice Scalia now often finds himself in a narrow majority on the Supreme Court, such as in a landmark gun control case in which he wrote for the 5-4 majority that the framers of the constitution believed in individual gun rights.

He was on his way to concede. He had already called GWB and conceded to him but some jerk news guy said the numbers in Fla. didn’t add up so thats when The Goracle decided to fight it and called GWB to take back his concession. It was supposed to be a simple recount over in a few hours but Gore turned it into a 36 day mightmare and put a wound on this country that will never heal.

“The one thing that Richard Nixon never gets credit for, is resigning when he did. If he would have been 1/10th the bastard Bill Clinton was, he would have hired a team long before that and ripped this nation right down the middle, just like the Clintons did.”

Nixon loved America. The Clintons do not pure and simple. That is why Clinton did not resign. He loved himself more.

“There is one difference between the two elections. Nixon was cheated out of victory. Daley stole Illinois and LBJ stole Texas.”

And Daley’s son tried to steal Flordia for that asshat Al Gore. Cheating, the way Democrats do business.

Didn't he already concede on TV right at first, then he took it back?

Yes, he did!

But then Nixon was a piker compared the the prick Clinton.

Your point is well taken.

If Nixon charted the path that Gore should've followed, then he also plotted the route that Clinton should've taken.

Amazing! Richard M. Nixon sets a moral standard that neither Slick Willie nor Algore could rise to.

"After the polls closed, it became apparent that the outcome of the very tight race would hinge on the results in Florida. At 2:16 a.m. early Wednesday morning, TV networks began declaring "Bush wins" based on their own Florida polling data and on each other's predictions. At 2:30 a.m., Al Gore telephoned Bush and offered his congratulations, conceding the election."

"However, within the next hour, Gore's political advisors determined that the TV networks had made an error in deciding the super-close Florida results in favor of Bush. An extraordinary event then occurred as Al Gore telephoned Bush once more and this time 'un-conceded.' Following this, the TV networks retracted their earlier statements that Bush had won. Thus, Americans awoke on Wednesday morning without a clear victor in the 2000 presidential election."

The truth is this whole debacle began by the Democrats in FL trying to steal the election. They got blacks to go along with them to the extent blacks were willing to allow Democrats to claim Florida blacks are so stupid they didn't know how to fill out a ballot.

The problem was Bush got more votes than they had planned on and they had to try to manufacture more votes. Thus the recounts. The plan was to keep recounting until they came up with the necessary votes.

Where there are Democrats, there is voter fraud.

I wish the author had emphasized that the votes WERE recounted, by the same press that has been complaining that Gore was robbed, and even by the MOST liberal standard proposed by Gore supporters he STILL would have lost Florida.

And that ignored the discarded military votes which favored Bush AND recounting any county where the uncounted votes were likely to favor Bush.

The fact Scalia made the right legal decision is less persuasive to the public than the reality that Gore would have lost no matter what the courts had ruled.

I'd never thought of these various developments in quite that way. Thanks for crystallizing the thought.

Meanwhile, Boodward and Wormstein can suck air.

Richard M. Nixon, for all his faults, which were legion, in my book, was at heart, an American. The same could never be said of either of those other two clowns...
