Media Darling Flips And Flops Way To Center
IBD Editorials ^ | June 26, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

"To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." —Obama spokesman Bill Burton, Oct. 24, 2007

That was then: Democratic primaries to be won, netroot lefties to be seduced. With all that (and Hillary Clinton) out of the way, Obama now says he'll vote in favor of the new FISA bill that gives the telecom companies blanket immunity for post-9/11 eavesdropping.

Back then, in the yesteryear of primary season, he thoroughly trashed the North American Free Trade Agreement, pledging to force a renegotiation, take "the hammer" to Canada and Mexico, and threaten unilateral abrogation.

Today, the hammer is holstered. Obama calls his previous NAFTA rhetoric "overheated" and essentially endorses what one of his senior economic advisers privately told the Canadians: The anti-trade stuff was nothing more than populist posturing.

Nor is there much left of his primary season pledge to meet "without preconditions" with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There will be "preparations," you see, which are being spun by his aides into the functional equivalent of preconditions.

Obama's long march to the center has begun.

And why not? What's the downside? He won't lose the left, or even mainstream Democrats. They won't stay home on Nov. 4. The anti-Bush, anti-Republican sentiment is simply too strong. Election Day is their day of revenge — for the Florida recount, for Swift-boating, for all the injuries, real and imagined, dealt out by Republicans over the last eight years.

This is still a center-right country. Obama cannot win with just the moonbats and liberals.

No - he's a smart politician. He may be an idiot on the issues but he knows running like a liberal in the general election isn't going to get him past the starting gate.

Did anyone hear on radio today that the AFL-CIO unions are pouring 200 mil in the works on ads for the flipper? I can’t remember what station.

Pretty much happens every election. nearly all candidates have to run to the extremes because that is where the True Believers are, both right and left; the ones who make calls and bring people to the polls, give money, etc
.
Then once they get the nomination both race to the center where most of the voters are.

There are probably an exactly equal number of people on FR who fall into the categories of ‘hold my nose and vote for the sellout’ as there are on DU. One can loath McCain and yet see what a difference ONE supreme court justice makes; for everyone reading the preceding sentence and agreeing there is probably somebody saying the same thing except in reference to Obama.

Noting new here.

The few exceptions that come to mind are Ike, being so extremely popular he did not need ‘the base’, Reagan (although less so) due to massive charisma and impeccable credentials to the base and some incumbents.

The character “Kingfish” on the old Amos ‘n’ Andy show comes to mind.

Only with the “Kingfish”, larceny was just funny. This Obama fellow is as serious as a heart attack.

I predict that Obama will, before the election, come out in favor of drilling offshore and in ANWR.

But what does it matter? I have met few few people without a hardened position one way or another. Could this money actually matter? I mean, does anyone remember the Obama ads he ran in PA against Hillary? I don’t. All that money down the drain and not one memorable ad.

A McCain victory in November puts Rodham back in play in 2012, when she’ll likely end the Republican run and serve two terms herself.

An Obama victory in November finishes Rodham off (and McCain too) and will likely result in 4 utterly inept years of mismanaged liberal government and the election of a for-real conservative in 2012—provided we get our act together between now and then.

So, there’s more nose-holding than one day in November for those who vote for McCain. If you’re my age, you’ll likely be holding your nose the rest of your life. So, I’m not gonna hold my nose for a moment. I’m resigned to 4 years of Obamanation during which the conservative cause will more easily galvanize than it did in 2006-08. So I say:

Bobby Jindal 2012. Be there or be nowhere.

Just how many YOUNG and healthy Ruth Bader Ginsbergs on the Supreme Court (for life!) could we have before you decided Obama over McCain wasn’t worth it?

Just what in your life makes you think that you posess the forsight to prognosticate all of that?

4 years of McCain will lead to 8 years of Hillary, but 4 years of Obama will lead to Jindal for 8 years???

Here's a question - who did you expect to get the R nomination a year ago. Guess wrong? You bet you did.

I heard that Allen West will be giving a speech addressing Obama and the use of “race” in politics. The GO WEST campaign will be videotaping the speech and it should be released sometime next week.

Obama will win, big time. Americans are not going to vote for the high strung, rather luny statist Republican alternative.
