LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - No matter how many blockbusters there are, Universal's screen version of the global hit stage musical "Mamma Mia!" is the most fun to be had at the movies this or any other recent summer.
Teenage boys may be glued to the latest action adventure, but the rest of the family will have a rollicking good time dancing in the aisles to Swedish pop group ABBA's irresistible songs. It's a delightful piece of filmmaking with a marvelous cast topped by Meryl Streep in one of her smartest and most entertaining performances.
After its world premiere in London on Monday, the film opens in the U.K. on July 4 and in North America on July 18. It will surely follow the stage show around the world in pleasing audiences and raking in what one of the infectious songs celebrates: "Money, Money, Money."

The music is of course fantastic and the comedy is witty and sharp. (In the stage production there is a very stern warning in ominous tones before the production begins: Warning! This play contains platform boots and white spandex pants.
Add to that the fact you get to see a Former James Bond Dancing and singing while wearing Spandex and Lycra and you have the recipe for some high caliber entertainment.
Looking forward to seeing it in the theatres, first time in I don’t know how many years.
ABBA will Rock Forever.
Just because I can't wait for the DVD on this one.

Part of the success of the stage play “Mama Mia” is that it changes dialogue to match the politics to match the audience of the city in which it is playing. In one sequence, one of the alleged fathers tells the girl lead that his wife would think herself too old to now become a mother. In the Boston version, which I saw, the line is changed to say that the character’s gay male companion would have trouble if he were to suddenly become a father.

I’ll have to go as it has Colin Firth as one of the possible Dads. He’s such a hunk of a man. Pierce Brosnan is good looking, but is rather a jerk. He’s a flaming liberal, and somehow thinks we care about his opinions.
Also, Dominic Cooper starred in the 2007 version of Sense & Sensibility which was shown on Masterpiece Theatre (PBS) in March. He played the part of the scoundrel, Willoughby. He did a good job in that role.
Plus the songs are great.
Not going to patronize any film with Meryl Streep in it.
Yummy.
“Not going to patronize any film with Meryl Streep in it.”
Nope. Another “Mom used to be a slut” movie. There was a time when not knowing who fathered their children was shameful to women.
I saw the Broadway show, and it was a lot of fun. The movie is out today!
Thanks for that...I was beginning to think I was the only one who found the premise of this movie to be shameful.
They story or plot will offend some here but it's so dumb anyway, just enjoy the music. It's like DNA or paternity tests don't exist.

The music and dancing were fabulous in the play. I really can't wait to see it...It put a smile on my face...
